Open opportunities at Crash Day
YOUNGSTOWN
More than 500 prospective students and their guests spent the day at Youngstown State University on Monday for Crash Day.
YSU’s Crash Day gives future students and their parents the opportunity to see what campus life is all about from a variety of different perspectives, said Mary Coller, Williamson College of Business Administration director of undergraduate student services.
Anna Duda, an incoming freshman attending her parents’ alma mater, agreed with Coller.
“There’s a lot about the business college I really didn’t know – like opportunities and different things to get involved in,” Duda said.
And that is the mission of many colleges at YSU – giving students opportunities.
“Today is the day we take the time to talk about the different ways students can get involved with the business community when they’re here [at YSU] through internship and leadership opportunities,” said Williamson Dean Betty Jo Licata. “We make sure we get you involved in business right away. We talk about excellence through engagement. We want them engaged from day one”
Sue Davis, director of undergraduate admissions, said a goal of Crash Day is for prospective students to see opportunities.
“This is their opportunity to visit the campus and kind of get the whole perspective of what being a YSU student is all about,” she said.
Attendees talked with current students, took campus tours, sat in on classes and more.
Megan Mercado, former YSU student, said her two sons Trey Riddle, 14, and Greyson Mercado, 6, experienced nothing but enjoyment from their YSU day.
“I think I have two future Penguins on my hands,” she said.
Doreen Gorospe, 1992 YSU alumnus and YSU parent, has not two, but three Penguins on her hands.
Her son Joe attends YSU, daughter Theresa will attend in the fall and youngest daughter Maria will attend as part of the College Credit Plus program while she’s finishes high school.
“I loved YSU,” Gorospe said. “Today just kind of shows a lot of aspects of YSU in a real casual and comfortable way.”
There will be two additional Crash Days this year at YSU Nov. 3 and 17.
