Scrappers fall to Black Bears in season opener

Staff report

GRANVILLE, W.Va.

Rain was not a friend to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers in Monday’s season opener against West Virginia.

After a rain delay of one hour and nine minutes, Luis Araujo replaced Jean Carlos Mejia in a scoreless game in the bottom of the seventh inning during the Black Bear’s 3-0 victory at Monongalia County Ballpark.

Araujo hit Matt Diorio and after a sacrifice bunt, Yoel Gonzalez singled to right and took second on the throw.

With two outs, Garrett Brown singled to center field for a 2-0 lead and he advanced to second on the throw to the plate.

Raul Siri doubled home Brown with the insurance run.

The Scrappers were unable to generate anything against Black Bear reliever Yoandy Fernandez (1-0) who struck out seven in the final three innings.

Scrappers starter Francisco Perez scattered three hits in his five innings of shutout ball. He struck out four and walked two.
