Included are single scholarships of $5,000 or more accepted by the student. Dollar amounts represent the total value of the scholarships for four or more years, if applicable.

HONORS

Youngstown State University’s student chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management received the 2016-17 Outstanding Student Chapter Award, the highest award given by the national association.

YSU placed in the top 4 percent of SHRM groups nationally. There are 327 student chapters across the nation.

The SHRM student chapter merit award program was created to encourage student chapters to require ongoing excellence in the following areas: student chapter requirements, chapter operations, chapter programming and professional development of members, support of the human resource profession and SHRM engagement.

LAWYERS

Kristen Basista, daughter of William and Cheryl Basista, recently graduated with a juris doctorate degree from Ohio State University Moritz College of Law.

She is a 2010 graduate of Mineral Ridge High School and a 2014 graduate of Westminster College, where she received a bachelor’s degree in neuroscience. During law school, Basista served as the technology editor for I/S: A Journal of Law and Policy for the Information Society; vice president of the Intellectual Property Law Society; and secretary of the Sports and Entertainment Law Association.

Basista will start her career in the fall with Buttaci, Leardi & Werner, a health law firm in Princeton, N.J.

Atty. Donald P. Scott was sworn in this month to the federal bar association by the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington, D.C. Scott is a 2015 Ohio State Bar Association Leadership Academy graduate and was licensed to practice law by Ohio Supreme Court in 2008.

Scott is a lifelong Youngstown resident. He received a bachelor’s degree in law-enforcement administration and an associate degree in police science technology from Youngstown State University.

Scott served as a police officer while attending Cleveland Marshall College of Law, where in 2002 he received his law degree. Afterward, he served in the Army through 2006. During his military career he received the Meritorious Service Medal and multiple awards. He retired from the Army in 2012.

Scott has continued to pursue advanced police-management training by attending the 12-week administrative officer course at the University of Louisville Southern Police Institute in 2016, where he graduated as an academic scholar. He also has served as a federal law-enforcement officer with the U.S. Capitol Police.
