Vacation Bible School
There will be a Vacation Bible School at the Church of the Rock from June 19 to the 23. The Church of the Rock is located at 7025 Luteran Lane in Poland. The theme of the Vacation Bible School is Maker Fun Factory “Created by God, Built for a Purpose.” The program will run from 6 to 9 p.m. and is open for children ages five to those who completed the sixth grade. Holy Family Seniors Group meeting
The Holy Family Seniors Group will meet Monday, June 19, 2017 at 11:30 a.m. in Holy Family Parish Hall, 2729 Center Rd., Poland. Poland Idol at Celebrate Poland
If you have a talent for singing, join Celebrate Poland for its annual Poland Idol Singing Contest on July 1. Judges will select winners from four age groups: Kindergarten through fourth grade; fifth through eighth grade; ninth through 12th grade; and adult. Registration for the contest begins at 10:30 a.m. on July 1 at the Village Hall Gazebo and the contest begins at noon. The registration fee is $20. Historical Society participates in June events
The Poland Historical Society recently announced the following activities it will participate in during June: on June 20 at 6:30 p.m. will be a meeting at the Little Red Schoolhouse, located at 4515 Center Road in Poland Township. The Poland Historical Society will be offering guided walking tours of historic sites in Poland during the week of Celebrate Poland 2017. Dates and times for the tours are June 28 from 7-8 p.m. for the historic South Main Street (meet at Poland Village Town Hall, located at 308 S. Main St. in Poland), June 29 from 7–8 p.m. for the Old Graveyard Tour next to Presbyterian Church (located at 2 Poland Manor), June 30 from 6–7 p.m. for the Old Graveyard Tour next to Presbyterian Church (located at 2 Poland Manor), June 30 from 8-9 p.m. for the historic Poland Presbyterian Church (located at 2 Poland Manor) and July 1 from 1-2 p.m. for the historic South Main Street (meet at the Poland Historical Society Tent, located near the Village Town Hall). Also on July 1, the Historical Society will have a display tent set up near Village Town Hall.
Poland Relay for Life celebrates superhero survivors
This year marks the 10th year of the Poland Relay for Life. Bring your entire family and help them celebrate. The theme this year is “Heroes of Hope.” Cancer survivors are superheroes, and they will be honored and supported during this relay event. The 2017 Poland Relay for Life will take place on June 16 and 17 at the Poland Seminary High School stadium, starting at 6 p.m. on June 16 and ending at 2 p.m. on June 17. Survivor Registration begins at 5 p.m. on Friday night. Friday night’s activities will include a free survivor dinner for survivors and their caregivers, provided by Belleria of Struthers, and the moving and uplifting Luminaria ceremony. Saturday will feature the Kids’ Relay Party, from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. with free prizes, cake and activities. At noon, there will be a Guinness Book World Record attempt for the most people at an event wearing capes, Pillow cases, towels, bags, anything can be your cape.
Strawberry Festival to be on June 30
Poland Presbyterian Church’s annual Strawberry Festival will take place on June 30 from 5-8:30 p.m. on the church lawn, located at 2 Poland Manor in Youngstown. The event will feature strawberries, ice cream, short cake, hot dogs, sausage sandwiches, snacks and beverages. There will be live jazz and a summer basket raffle.
Activities for children at Celebrate Poland
Celebrate Poland offers activities for all ages. The fun begins on June 30 with the parade and the chance to gather up free candy tossed by marchers. Some of the children’s offerings on July 1 include Bounce-A-Rounds, Touch a Truck, Poland Idol Contest, Chalk the Walk, children’s games, miniature golf and a reptile show. All of this, food and more are available throughout the day on July 1 at Poland Village Hall. A spectacular fireworks display will be enjoyed by all in the evening. Venders needed for Celebrate Poland event

Hogwarts summer school
Dress as your favorite wizard and join the Poland library for potions-and-spells summer school on June 21 at 10 a.m. You will be sorted into houses and each group will visit hands-on laboratory stations, where the library’s concoctions are sure to please. Learning to navigate Google Drive
Google Drive is a free service from Google that allows you to store files online and access them anywhere using the cloud. The Poland library invites you to come and learn how to navigate this program with them on June 19 at 11 a.m. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Poland branch to register.
Blood drive at the library
There will be a blood drive by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross to serve the needs of St. Elizabeth Hospital at the Poland library on June 22 from 12:30-6:30 p.m. For appointments, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
Fix your own car
Do you use repair and shop manuals to fix things yourself? A lot of these are digital now. Go to the Poland library on June 20 at 6:30 p.m. to learn how to use Mitchell’s Pro Demand and EBSCO’s Small Engine Repair Reference Center databases. This event is for adults.
Pop Art Collage Workshop
Join New York pop artist Michael Albert at the Poland library on June 27 at 10 a.m. for a collage workshop where you will create and take home your very own work of art and receive a signed sample from the artist. This event is for school-age children, teens and adults only. Registration is limited for this two-hour program. Call the library or sign up on the events calendar.
Tromp through the swamp with Tom Sieling
Learn all about Ohio animals and the homes they build while singing along with Tom Sieling as he accompanies himself on guitar, banjo, harmonica and a drum machine at the Poland library on June 17 at 11 a.m. This event is for children of all ages.
Yoga class
Friends of PLYMC is sponsoring a Yoga Class every Wednesday at the Poland library from 5-6 p.m. Pay as you attend at $10 per session. For more information, call 330-740-6086. This event is for adults.
Spanish for bigger children
Children in grades 1-4 are invited to learn Spanish language and culture through games and interactive activities taught by James Hungerford at the Poland library on June 19 and 26 at 6 p.m. Space is limited for this program series. Bonding with Babies and Books
This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Poland library every Wednesday in June at 10 a.m.
Gussy up your bike
At 4 p.m. at the Poland library, use crepe paper and other materials to get your bike beautiful for the Celebrate Poland parade taking place later on the evening of June 30. The program will be outside, weather permitting. Gather on the patio behind the library, outside the meeting room. This event is for children of all ages.
Trim a tree
Decorate an ornament for the Poland library’s all-seasons tree throughout library hours in June. This event is for children of all ages.
Read to Roxie
Relax and read to Roxie, a registered therapy dog with Therapy Dogs International, at 6 p.m. at the Poland library on June 28. Each child will be given a 15-minute reading session while spots remain. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Poland library to register. This event is for grades 1-4.
Disco Inferno to perform at Celebrate Poland
The popular disco retro group, Disco Inferno, will be performing at the annual Celebrate Poland festival on June 30 at 8 p.m. behind the Village Hall. Admission is free. The Cleveland area group is the number one disco tribute band in the midwest with more than 150 shows a year. Disco Inferno was formed in 1996 and has been seen at venues in several states. They play hits from the late 70’s and early 80’s such as “Burn Baby Burn,” “Stayin Alive,” “Saturday Night Fever” and “Boogie Nights.” Adding to the fun will be a disco dress theme contest. Join Celebrate Poland as they return to the disco era.
Party with “Captain Underpants”
Captain Underpants fans: join the Poland library on June 23 at 11 a.m. for a Tra-la-la-mendous time as they celebrate with games, activities and crafts. This event is for school-age children.
Summer reading begin
Visit a Mahoning County public library or sign up online for this year’s Summer Discovery Program. This year’s theme is “Build a Better World!” and runs through July 31. All who register will receive free coupons, just for signing up. Children can complete activities or read books to earn prizes (while supplies last) and to earn a chance to win a gift card. Children who complete the program by July 21 will also be invited to a breakfast in July, sponsored by Home Savings and Loan and Sweeney Chevy Buick GMC, featuring Rosemary Wells, best-selling author of the Max and Ruby books. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to take place on July 17
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at the Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 17. The cost is $110 per golfer. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. The 18 hole four-person scramble will be followed by lunch and a Chinese auction and raffle. Local church hosts festival June 14-18
Saint Nicholas Church, located at 764 Fifth Street in Struthers, is having its 44th annual festival on June 14-18. Admission price is $2, and children who are ages 12 and under are free. June 14 from 6-10 p.m. will be Children’s Night with discounted ride tickets, Joko the Clown (from 6:30-8:30 p.m.) and pony rides all week. There will also be a new Father’s Day Parish Raffle, 50/50 raffle and Chinese auction all week. On June 15, the festival will run from 6-11 p.m. and will feature the Del Sinchak Polka Band from 6-10 p.m. On June 16, the festival will run from 6 p.m. until 12 a.m. and Guys Without Ties will perform at 7 p.m. On June 17 (6 p.m. until 12 a.m.), Haymaker - the Rock Band will perform at 7 p.m. On June 18 (6-11 p.m.), will feature the Power of Praise band from 6-10 p.m. The event will feature homemade food, games, rides and more. The festival is sponsored by Knights of Columbus Council #4471. Entrances to festival include Creed Street between the school and the hall, and Wilson Street between the church and Tiny Tots. Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend. Loghurst Museum to host Trunk and Treasure sale
There will be a Trunk and Treasure sale for the Canfield Heritage Foundation (Loghurst) every first and third Saturday of each month during summer, starting on May 6 (on days that the museum is open) from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. with set-up from 8-9 a.m. The cost is $10 per vehicle. Vendors are able to sell from their pick-ups, trunks of their cars or whatever vehicle they have. They may use a tent/table, etc. in their space. Applications for Italian festival scholarship available
This year’s applications for a Youngstown State University Scholarship from The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest may be retrieved from the festival’s website http://www.youngstownitalianfest.org/ or by contacting Deborah Mottle at mottlesmurals@gmail.com. Applicants must attend Youngstown State University and be of Italian descent in order to be eligible. The deadline for applicants is June 15, 2017.
Italian man and woman to be honored at festival, applications accepted
The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest 2017 is seeking nominations from family members or friends regarding their favorite Italian man or Italian woman. The nominees would be considered for the highest honor and if selected would be introduced in person at the festival ceremony on Aug. 4 at 5 p.m. in downtown Youngstown.
