Hilltop Elementary School had its annual Vehicle Career Day on May 19. Vehicle Career Day took place in the front parking lot, with volunteer Hilltop parents, community members and local safety services providing their vehicles.
The vehicles were set up for the students to be able to get an up-close look and have an interactive experience while also learning about the vehicle, the career associated with it and the relationship of the vehicle to the career.
Ten vehicle stations were set up, including Canfield City Police car and Canfield Township SUV, Cardinal Joint Fire District fire truck, an ambulance, Fishbone Off Road Jeeps, a tractor, a construction vehicle, a UPS truck, a sports car from Fairway Ford and a Model T. An orthopedic surgeon was also on hand to explain his career to the students.
Each grade level had an hour to visit the vehicles while rotating every five minutes to ensure each student was able to visit each station. Sara Michaliszyn served as chair of Career Day and Hilltop PTO volunteers were also on hand to help.
“Our Vehicle Career Day is extremely interactive. The students have the opportunity to touch, feel, get in and even honk the horn of the vehicles. All our vehicles are different from last year, so they are being exposed to so many careers, thanks to all our vehicle volunteers. We really appreciate their time and help. We also invited the police and fire departments so the children can see them up close and become familiar with them and know they are there to help them,” said Julie Miller, Hilltop PTO president.
