Boardman Stadium closes for six weeks for track resurfacing project
The Boardman Stadium will be closed to the public from June 19 through Aug. 1 for a major track resurfacing project. The district will open the old stadium at Boardman Center Intermediate School for walkers to use during the closure. The public’s understanding and cooperation is appreciated. R.T. Vernal Paving and Excavating Inc. of North Lima will grind off the existing track surface, and resurface with new asphalt, and the placement of new rubber surfacing and paint. The board approved the $184,180 project on May 22. It was the lowest of three bids.
Glenwood students place in Junior Solar Sprint Car Challenge at Kent State
Boardman Glenwood Junior High’s Makers Club was new this school year, but the group took hold and made their mark in competition. One team placed second out of 122 cars. Technology Teacher Tim Harker took a group of his Makers Members to compete in the regional Junior Solar Sprint Car Challenge at Kent State University on May 18. Boardman was one of nine school districts to compete, and the only Mahoning Valley School district among Cleveland Area teams. This middle school activity challenges students to design, test and improve solar cars using strict parameters. Student teams are given 3V rated solar panels, 3V rated dc motors and they have access to maker tools from their school’s lab. The other materials used are up to them. Vehicles are guided on a 20-meter wire and try to obtain the fastest speed with the available sun. Boardman Glenwood eighth-graders Caleb Zupanik and Ryan Sweeder’s solar car came in second of 122 solar cars in the Sprint Challenge.
It’s all about yarn
Bring in your crochet, knitting, plastic canvas or “anything with yarn” project and learn from one another on June 30 at 11 a.m. at the Boardman library. Participants are encouraged to bring all yarn UFOs (unfinished objects). This event is for adults and teens.
I Read YA book club
This book club is for adult fans of Young Adult Literature from ages 18-118. Talk about why you like YA. Read and discuss. The next meeting will be at the Boardman library on June 19 at 6:30 p.m.
Blood drive at the library
There will be a blood drive by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross to serve the needs of St. Elizabeth Hospital at the Boardman library on June 26 from 1:30-6:30 p.m. For appointments, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
Gardening with native plants
Master Gardener Peg Zeleznik will talk about native plants versus invasive plants, how native plants are good for the environment and how to add them to your garden or landscape on June 24 at 10 a.m. at the Boardman library. Refreshments will be served. Registration is required.
Pop Art Collage Workshop with Michael Albert
Join New York pop artist Michael Albert at the Boardman library on June 29 at 10 a.m. for a collage workshop where you will create and take home your very own work of art and receive a signed sample from the artist. This event is for school-age children, teens and adults only. Registration is limited for this two-hour program. Call the library or sign up on the events calendar.
Holocaust survivors
Holocaust Education Specialist Jess McClain will share the experiences of local holocaust survivors Henry Kinast and Bill Vegh at the Boardman library on June 20 at 7 p.m. This event is for teens and adults.
Bonding with Babies and Books
This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Boardman library every Tuesday in June at 10 a.m.
Lego Mindstorms Robots - part 2
Explore the next phase of Lego Mindstorms Robots at the Boardman library on June 22 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. (pizza provided). Children will work through new stages of building and programming robots. There will be a break to eat. Lego my library
Meet at the Boardman library on June 17 at 10 a.m. and enjoy creating Lego designs. Legos will be provided. This event is for children, ages 6 and up.
Arabian nights and tales
Eight high school actors will take on beloved Arabian fairy tale characters to deliver wonderful fairy tales at the Boardman library on June 30 at 11 a.m. This event is for children of all ages.
“One Child, One Planet”
Join Peg Flynn and Kim Lewis of the Mahoning County Green Team at the Boardman library on June 21 at 10 a.m. as they present “One Child, One Planet” by Bridget McGovern Llewellyn and Carl R. Sams II during the Summer Reading program. Each page of this book offers suggestions for young and old alike on ways we can appreciate and take care of our precious planet. After reading the story, program participants will create a craft with recovered material and will receive an activity book and information to share with their parents. This program is recommended for children in grades Pre-K through 5.
Summer reading begin
Visit a Mahoning County public library or sign up online for this year’s Summer Discovery Program. This year’s theme is “Build a Better World!” and runs through July 31. All who register will receive free coupons, just for signing up. Children can complete activities or read books to earn prizes (while supplies last) and to earn a chance to win a gift card. Children who complete the program by July 21 will also be invited to a breakfast in July, sponsored by Home Savings and Loan and Sweeney Chevy Buick GMC, featuring Rosemary Wells, best-selling author of the Max and Ruby books. Vacation Bible School at Church of the Rock
There will be a Vacation Bible School at the Church of the Rock from June 19 to the 23. The Church of the Rock is located at 7025 Luteran Lane in Poland. The theme of the Vacation Bible School is Maker Fun Factory “Created by God, Built for a Purpose.” The program will run from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and is open for children ages five to those who completed the sixth grade. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to take place on July 17
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at the Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 17. The cost is $110 per golfer. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. The 18 hole four-person scramble will be followed by lunch and a Chinese auction and raffle. GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend. Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. Loghurst Museum to host Trunk and Treasure sale
There will be a Trunk and Treasure sale for the Canfield Heritage Foundation (Loghurst) every first and third Saturday of each month during summer, starting on May 6 (on days that the museum is open) from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. with set-up from 8-9 a.m. The cost is $10 per vehicle. Vendors are able to sell from their pick-ups, trunks of their cars or whatever vehicle they have. They may use a tent/table, etc. in their space. Italian man and woman to be honored at festival, applications accepted
The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest 2017 is seeking nominations from family members or friends regarding their favorite Italian man or Italian woman. The nominees would be considered for the highest honor and if selected would be introduced in person at the festival ceremony on Aug. 4 at 5 p.m. in downtown Youngstown.
