Brookdale Austintown honors veterans
On May 25, Brookdale Austintown, located at 1420 South Canfield Niles Road in Austintown, hosted an event to honor their veterans. Brookdale Austintown is a dementia-care community, providing services to residents in the Mahoning Valley. This was an opportunity to recognize its seven veterans. Its residents suffer from memory loss, and this was a great way for them to help them remember how brave and important their life was and still is, as well as the great sacrifices they made. Rosemary Antonucci, LSW Manager of Volunteer Services, performed a pinning ceremony will, consisting of an introduction, invocation, presentation of pins and certificates to honor them for their service, and also a musical performance. This was all provided by Hospice of the Valley.
Austintown Schools restructure administrative staffing
Due to a reduction of 100 residential and 150 open-enrollment students the Austintown administration will be reducing their administrative staff from 13 principals to 12 principals at the start of the 2017-2018 school year. The following positions will be assigned for the 2017- 2018 school year: Austintown Elementary School - Tom Lenton (Head Principal), Tim Kelty; Austintown Intermediate School - Michael Sauner (Head Principal), Angel Owens; AES and AIS - Robin Vickers (Assistant Principal of Instruction and Continuous Improvement); Austintown Middle School - Ben Baldner (Head Principal), Joanie Jones, Eric Jones; Austintown Fitch High School - Chris Berni (Head Principal), Jim Penk, Jeff Swavel and Marc Pupino. The administration congratulates Mike Sauner, new head principal of Austintown Intermediate, and Ben Balder, new head principal of Austintown Middle. Both gentlemen have been with district and were former assistant principals at Fitch High School.
Two Austintown school buildings receive Rising Star breakfast awards
Austintown Elementary and Fitch High School received recognitions as Rising Star Breakfast All-Star Schools for their outstanding efforts to increase school breakfast participation. Four hundred and forty-five Ohio Schools met the criteria for the Fall 2016 and/or Spring 2017 Ohio School Breakfast Challenge. All schools will be recognized and receive a “Breakfast All-Star Banner.” Studies show that students that eat breakfast at school have better concentration, better attendance and are more likely to have improved nutrition. Austintown Local Schools encourage all students to participate in the School Breakfast Program so they start the day healthy and ready to learn.
Annual bike run to be July 16
All About the Pawz and West Side Cats are hosting the sixth annual Bike Run on July 16 at Austintown Township Park, located at 6000 Kirk Road in Austintown. The cost to participate is $15 per bike, $5 per passenger and $10 per bike show entry. The event will include a free concert and family fun day, starring Amanda Jones and Ron Hamrick. There will be refreshments, a Chinese auction, a 50/50 raffle, prizes, trophies and more.
Create a button bowl
Learn how to make a small decorative bowl out of buttons at the Austintown library on June 17 at 2 p.m. This event is for children in grades 6-12.
Build a better teen area
The Austintown library wants to spruce up the teen area this summer with your artwork. They have got sketch pads, colored pencils and other medium. This event is for teens in grades 7-12.
Paper crafting corner
Join the Austintown library every month to learn how to create a different paper craft. This month’s event will take place on June 30 at 11 a.m. Registration is necessary. This event is for adults.
Movies at the library
Bring your own snacks and drinks to enjoy during the movie on June 27 at 6 p.m. at the Austintown library. The movie will be a newly released DVD rated PG or G. This event is for the family. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Basic Microsoft Word class
Learn very basic computer skills involving the Microsoft Office Word program on June 19 at 6 p.m. at the Austintown library. This is a beginner’s class that will cover cut and paste and the Word menus. Space is limited. Call 330-744-8636 to register and specify library and Basic Word Class. This event is for adults.
Page Turners book club
If you love books and are looking for a good read, go to this book club meeting at the Austintown library on June 21 from 6-7 p.m. Hear what others are reading and share your favorite read, or just come in and join the fun. This event is for adults.
Chapter Chat book club
Go to the Austintown library on June 28 at 6:30 p.m. for the Chapter Chat Book Club, where they will be reading and discussing a book together every month. Each month will be a new genre. Tea and Mystery book club
Join the Austintown library for this book club on June 20 at 6 p.m. where they will sip tea and discuss your latest mystery finds. This event is for adults.
Coupon swap at the library
If you have coupons you don’t need or need coupons you don’t have, drop in during the Austintown library hours in June through August to stretch your shopping dollars by swapping coupons. This event is for adults.
Free breakfast and lunch program available for area children
Austintown Local Schools, the Board of Education and USDA will present a free breakfast and lunch program, Monday through Friday, from June 5 until Aug. 18, at Austintown Elementary School, located at 245 Idaho Road (enter from the back parking lot into the side door with the canopy). Breakfast will take place from 7:45-9 a.m. and lunch will take place from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. All children who are ages 1-18 will be eligible to receive one free breakfast and one free lunch during those times and on those days. Canfield Community Concert Band hosts June 27 event
The Canfield Community Concert Band is hosting a new event, the John Philip Sousa Piccolo Palooza, on June 27 at the Austintown Township Park. The band is inviting area piccolo players to join in an epic performance of Sousa’s “Stars and Stripes Forever.” The band has applied to set a world record for number of piccolos playing the piece. The event is also part of the Austintown Fireworks Committee Fourth of July celebration. Players of any age are invited to sign up at the band’s website, www.canfieldccband.org. Bonding with Babies and Books
This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Austintown library every Tuesday in June at 10 a.m.
Pop Art Collage Workshop with Michael Albert
Join New York pop artist Michael Albert at the Austintown library on June 27 at 2 p.m. for a collage workshop where you will create and take home your very own work of art and receive a signed sample from the artist. This event is for school-age children, teens and adults only. Registration is limited for this two-hour program. Call the library or sign up on the events calendar.

Children of all ages can make a craft to take home during regular hours at the Austintown library from June through August.
Gotta move story time
This event is for children, ages 2-5, who are accompanied by a care-giver. Join the Austintown library every Thursday in June at 10 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.
Lego Mindstorms Robots - part 1
Discover how to build, program and test Lego Mindstorms Robots from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. on June 23 at the Austintown library (bring a packed lunch). Children will work through the stages of building and programming the robots with a break to eat. This event is for children in grades 4-7. Green Team presents “One Child, One Planet”
Join Peg Flynn and Kim Lewis of the Mahoning County Green Team at the Austitnown library on June 28 at 10 a.m. as they present “One Child, One Planet” by Bridget McGovern Llewellyn and Carl R. Sams II during the Summer Reading program. Each page of this book offers suggestions for young and old alike on ways we can appreciate and take care of our precious planet. After reading the story, program participants will create a craft with recovered material and will receive an activity book and information to share with their parents. This program is recommended for children in grades Pre-K through 5.
Our Zoo to You program
Come to the Austintown library on June 21 at 2 p.m. and make some animal friends from the Our Zoo to You program. Children will be able to see and touch a variety of exotic animals during our visit with the Our Zoo to You traveling petting zoo. This event is for children of all ages.
Summer reading begin
Visit a Mahoning County public library or sign up online for this year’s Summer Discovery Program. This year’s theme is “Build a Better World!” and runs through July 31. All who register will receive free coupons, just for signing up. Children can complete activities or read books to earn prizes (while supplies last) and to earn a chance to win a gift card. Children who complete the program by July 21 will also be invited to a breakfast in July, sponsored by Home Savings and Loan and Sweeney Chevy Buick GMC, featuring Rosemary Wells, best-selling author of the Max and Ruby books. Austintown Park to have summer concerts
The 2017 Summer Concerts in the Park series, presented by Hollywood Gaming Mahoning Valley Race Course, at Austintown Park will soon begin. Concerts will take place on Tuesday evenings, from 7-8:30 p.m., weather permitting. Concerts will include the Frank Gallo Band on June 20, the Canfield Community Concert Band on June 27, The Wrangler Band on July 11, Train Wreck on July 14, Guys Without Ties on July 18, Border Ride on July 25, Blue Siren on Aug. 1, Amanda Jones and The Family Band on Aug. 8, Jim Frank Combo on Aug. 15 and Sound Bite on Aug. 22. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to take place on July 17
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at the Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 17. The cost is $110 per golfer. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. The 18 hole four-person scramble will be followed by lunch and a Chinese auction and raffle. Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend. Loghurst Museum to host Trunk and Treasure sale
There will be a Trunk and Treasure sale for the Canfield Heritage Foundation (Loghurst) every first and third Saturday of each month during summer, starting on May 6 (on days that the museum is open) from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. with set-up from 8-9 a.m. The cost is $10 per vehicle. Vendors are able to sell from their pick-ups, trunks of their cars or whatever vehicle they have. They may use a tent/table, etc. in their space. Applications for Italian festival scholarship available
This year’s applications for a Youngstown State University Scholarship from The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest may be retrieved from the festival’s website http://www.youngstownitalianfest.org/ or by contacting Deborah Mottle at mottlesmurals@gmail.com. The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest 2017 is seeking nominations from family members or friends regarding their favorite Italian man or Italian woman. The nominees would be considered for the highest honor and if selected would be introduced in person at the festival ceremony on Aug. 4 at 5 p.m. in downtown Youngstown.
