YSU abruptly cancels camps

The Youngstown State football team has canceled both of its satellite camps this week, head coach Bo Pelini announced via Twitter on Monday.

“Due to an oversight by members of our University regarding the interpretation of NCAA regulations, I regret to announce YSU must cancel our satellite camps scheduled for June 14 and 15 [Wednesday and Thursday],” Pelini tweeted.

Pelini did not specify which members of the university did what or what regulation was misinterpreted in his tweet.

Ron Strollo, YSU Athletic Director, was traveling on Monday evening and said he wasn’t made aware of the camps’ cancellation.

Strollo said sports camps are often handled by the coaches themselves and the athletic department’s compliance office. Other officials for the football team couldn’t be reached for comment.

The camps were set to be at Thomas Worthington High School near Columbus and Centerville High School near Dayton. The camps were to be two-hour skills camps at a price of $50 a camper.

YSU’s football website says registered campers will get a full refund.

In April, the NCAA announced new rules concerning college football with some concerning satellite camps. Camps may now only take place on a school’s campus or in facilities regularly used by a team. Camps may only be hosted for 10-day periods in June and July. The only exception is if the school was honoring a contract signed before Jan. 18.

Coaches are allowed to talk to recruits and participants at camps, but must also provide educational sessions concerning eligibility and other rules.

The new rules were created as a response to coaches hosting camps far away from their campus.

An example of this is when Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh hosted a satellite camp at Warren Harding High School last summer.
