1842: Queen Victoria becomes the first British monarch to ride on a train, traveling from Slough Railway Station to Paddington in 25 minutes.

1917: During World War I, a group of German Gotha bombers attacks London, killing 162 people.

1942: A four-man Nazi sabotage team arrives on Long Island, N.Y., during World War II, three days before a second four-man team landed in Florida. (All eight were arrested after two members of the first group decided to defect and cooperate with U.S. authorities; they were ultimately spared while the other six were executed.)

1957: The Mayflower II, a replica of the ship that brought the Pilgrims to America in 1620, arrives at Plymouth, Mass., after a nearly two-month journey from England.

1966: The Supreme Court rules in Miranda v. Arizona that criminal suspects have to be informed of their constitutional right to consult with an attorney and to remain silent.

1967: President Lyndon B. Johnson nominates Solicitor-General Thurgood Marshall to become the first black justice on the U.S. Supreme Court.

2007: Federal prosecutors drop all charges against former Democratic vice-presidential candidate John Edwards after his corruption trial ended the previous month in a deadlocked jury.

1992: The Ohio Department of Education is investigates operations at Warren’s Learning Center for students with behavior problems after a complaint filed with the state by former school board member Sharon Nuzzi.

Social Security offices in Youngstown and Warren say that companies are offering services for a fee that the SS office will do for free, such as obtaining a Social Security card or changing the name on a card.

Youngstown city officials are hoping the success of the B&O Railroad Station restaurant will spur other development.

1977: The Ohio House of Representatives is considering a bill to give township trustees the power to require screens around drive-in theaters to block the view from nearby roads.

J. Ross Baughman, a Lorain Journal photographer, reveals he infiltrated the American Nazi movement in Cleveland, living for several months as a card-carrying, gun-toting member of the Cleveland chapter.

1967: Two teenage boys drown while swimming in district lakes: David Amendolara, 14, of Austintown, drowned in Cedar Lake in Lords town, and Ernest Swogger, 18, of Sharpsville, drowned in Shenango Reservoir. Swogger was the first person to drown at the new reservoir.

The Mahoning County Sheriff’s mounted deputies raise $400 at a home show on the Canfield Fairgrounds to help deputies transport and maintain their horses. They are not paid for posse services.

Two unidentified flying objects are reported at 2 a.m. by two Boardman residents, Jack Jennings and Dave Entrikin on Sylvia Lane.

A small elevator at the rear of the Mahoning County Courthouse, part of a $135,000 replacement program, breaks down five times on its first day.

1942: Joseph “Ted” Murphy, a former Youngstowner, was on the U.S.S. Lexington just before the aircraft carrier sank after the battle of the Coral Sea. Murphy arrived in San Diego to visit his wife, the former Marjorie Lindquist.

A parade of Hubbard’s civilian defense units, led by state highway patrolmen, leads to a rally at the high school that draws a crowd of 1,000.
