Services for Robert J. Sorokach Sr., a Youngstown State University professor emeritus, are scheduled for 11 a.m. today in St. John’s Orthodox Chapel in Hermitage, Pa.

Sorokach, 87, of Warren died Friday evening at his home. He joined the YSU faculty as a professor of mechanical engineering in 1961, a position in which he served until 1968. He then became the chairman of the Industrial Engineering Department, and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1996. Upon retirement, Sorokach was conferred with the title professor emeritus.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Heart Association or MVI Hospice.

Vacant building fire

Extra firefighting crews were called Monday to battle a blaze at a vacant 1169 Randall Ave. building on the North Side. Reports said crews found smoke pouring from the structure after they were called about 4:15 a.m. Firefighters managed to get the blaze under control quickly once they got inside, reports said. Two firefighters were slightly injured. Damage is listed at $25,000. The cause is under investigation.

City man back in jail

YOUNGSTOWN

A man free on bond who faces a July 31 trial on weapons charges is back in the Mahoning County jail after police found a dose of suspected crack cocaine on him during a traffic stop at Oakwood and Manchester avenues on the West Side.

DeAndre Fant, 29, of Detroit Avenue, was arraigned Monday in municipal court on a charge of crack cocaine. He was arrested about 6:50 p.m. Friday after police pulled over a car he was driving for having no front license plate.

Fant was free on $33,000 bond awaiting a July 31 trial date in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court on a charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

He was one of four people who had suspected crack cocaine arrested over the weekend by police.
