Nine people became U.S. citizens in a Thursday naturalization ceremony before Judge Lou A. D’Apolito of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court. A Youngstown resident originating from Yemen did not wish to be named. The other new citizens, their countries of origin and current hometowns are: Atem Ajong Fontem, Cameroon, Youngstown; Mireille Antoun Elisse, Canada, Poland; Peter Zindi, Zimbabwe, Boardman; Ghassan Mohamad Rajeh, Lebanon, Youngstown; Anna Louise Aey, United Kingdom, Canfield; Michael Edward Fawcett, Canada, Youngstown; Arno Kurt Hess, Germany, Liberty; and Firdevs Gulenay Ozcan, Turkey, Youngstown.
Tire recycling set

A countywide tire recycling drive will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Covelli Centre, 229 E. Front St. The first 10 passenger car tires will be accepted free of charge, the Mahoning County Recycling Division announced. Thereafter, the charge is $2 per passenger car tire. Charges vary by size and weight for truck and agricultural tires.
Walk/run meeting

The next planning and working meeting for the upcoming African-American Male Wellness Walk/Run is at 11:30 a.m. June 20 in the Cobbin Office Tower, 1350 Fifth Ave.
The fifth-annual Mahoning Valley event will begin at 7 a.m. Aug. 12 at the Covelli Centre, 229 E. Front St. Health screenings will begin at 7 a.m., with the 5K walk/run to start about 9 a.m.

Shoplifting charge

An Ohio State Penitentiary corrections officer faces a misdemeanor theft charge for purportedly shoplifting from the Walmart on Doral Drive. Charged is Julianna Stefek, 42, of Poland. She was arrested on a warrant Tuesday in the incident reported in May. According to a police report, Stefek paid for $24 worth of merchandise, but left with $71 worth of items. Stefek is on paid administrative leave from her job, according to The Vindicator’s broadcast partner 21 WFMJ-TV.
Stadium closure

Boardman Stadium will be closed to the public from June 19 through Aug. 1 while construction crews replace the track. The board of education approved the $184,180 project May 22. The old Spartan Stadium behind Boardman Center Intermediate School at 7410 Market St. will be open for walkers to use while the stadium undergoes renovations.

Effective Monday through next Friday, Bushnell Campbell Road will be closed, between Spencer Clark Road and Everett Hull Road, due to culvert replacement, the Trumbull County Engineer’s Office announced. The recommended detour route is west on state Route 305, north on Warner Road and east on Bradley Brownlee Road.
