Cathy Stafford, an employee of the Subway restaurant on Parkman Road in Warren, preparing a sandwich while working Wednesday. On Tuesday evening, a man came into the restaurant wearing a mask and demanding money from the register, but Stafford refused.

Parkman Road Subway restaurant employee Cathy Stafford says she’s not sure why she refused when a masked man demanded cash from the register Tuesday afternoon. Something possessed her to tell him to “get lost.”

Maybe because it was near the end of a “busy, busy day, and I was tired,” or because other employees at the same restaurant were robbed just last Thursday.

As the young man’s voice grew louder and more demanding, Stafford asked if he had a gun and if so, why doesn’t he show it to her. She thinks she asked him about three times if he had a gun, and he said yes.

“I said, ‘If you do, I’ll give you the money,’” she said. He never showed it.

Stafford’s co-worker started filming the encounter, which she later posted on Facebook. In it, Stafford can be heard asking the young man, “Are you the one who’s been robbing these places?”

And with that, he grabbed the tip jar next to the register containing about $10 in cash, swore at Stafford and left.

Stafford said Wednesday the workers showed the video to the employees working when the store was robbed in a similar fashion Thursday, and they think Tuesday’s robber is the same one from Thursday.

In that robbery, a man described as having blond hair, red hat and plaid shirt in his late 20s to early 30s demanded money while saying he had a gun under his shirt. He got about $375 from the register and ran, police said.
