Photography winners

WARREN

The Geauga-Trumbull Solid Waste Management District has awarded two winners from Trumbull County and three from Geauga County $50 prizes for their photographs.

The Trumbull County winners are Ashley Gore, 12, of Howland Middle School and Nysa Gilchrist, 13, of W.S. Guy School, Liberty.

All winners and many honorable mentions received a recycling-themed T-shirt and tote bag.

The students were asked to capture something beautiful in nature and write a paragraph on how it encourages them and others to care about our earth’s environment through conservation and stewardship.

Fairgrounds water

CANFIELD

A new agreement between the city and the Mahoning County Agricultural Society will keep Canfield from charging Canfield Fairgrounds for water that isn’t returned into the sewer system.

City council granted city Manager Joe Warino authority to enter into the agreement Wednesday. Warino said the city has been working on the agreement for the better part of the year.

The agricultural society will propose a deduction based on a yearly average the city will approve.

Warino said he hoped the savings would be put toward improving the fairgrounds sanitary system.

Classes for parents

YOUNGSTOWN

Parents of children age 3 to 8 are invited to join Alta Behavioral Healthcare professionals for a group series on positive ways to parent.

Free weekly classes will be offered as part of Alta’s Incredible Years Early Childhood Parent Group. Classes take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday through Aug. 1 at Alta Behavioral Healthcare, 711 Belmont Ave.

In the course of the seven two-hour sessions, participants will learn why play is more than just having fun, how praise and rewards improve behavior, tips on teaching children to listen, ways to decrease annoying behaviors, discipline ideas and promoting school readiness.

Child-sitting is available if needed, and a light supper will be provided for families and children. To register, contact Bethany Reed-Crouch or Gary Baughman at 330-793-2487.

Student YSU trustee

YOUNGSTOWN

Gov. John Kasich appointed Lexi Rager of Bristolville to a two-year term as a student member of the Youngstown State University Board of Trustees. Her term runs through April 30, 2019.

A daughter of William and April Rager, also of Bristolville, Rager is a junior majoring in integrated mathematics education. She is also YSU Honors College Trustees president.

In addition, Trustee Charles Bush resigned from the board because he is now a resident of Florida. A replacement has not been named.

Marijuana possession

AUSTINTOWN

A woman arrived at Austintown Police Department in a car without license plates and possessing marijuana Tuesday, according to a report.

Norie Holley, 36, of Warren, came to the police department to speak to a detective. When told it’s illegal to operate a car without license plates, Holley told an officer the Supreme Court said she can in the case of an emergency.

Police reportedly found a bag of suspected marijuana when searching her car before towing. She is charged with possession of marijuana.

Waterline gets grant

WARREN

Trumbull County commissioners and the county sanitary engineering department have been informed the Blueprint for Prosperity waterline from Braceville Township to West Farmington has been awarded an additional $3.15 million in grant funds.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency had originally awarded $6.25 million in grants and $6.25 million in zero-percent loans.

The additional grant money will reduce the cost of the water service to residents of West Farmington and the townships of Braceville, Farmington and Southington, according to a news release from the commissioners.
