Dobbins third- and fourth-grade students were encouraged to do, act, wonder and grow for the second annual DAWG Day on May 5.
The day was designed to promote health and wellness in a fun way. Students were asked to think about their personal choices and how they affect their growth and daily life.
“It’s a health and wellness promotion, teaching the importance of physical activity, smart nutrition choices. We try to focus on different safety aspects too,” said Cathy Fedor, school nurse.
The committee of the program was Fedor, Food Service Director Barb Walko and parent coordinators Maureen Rothrauff, Theresa Rapp, Jill Knez, Heather Kollar and Juliann Tukalo.
Representatives from Akron Children’s Hospital, Dr. John’s Family Dentistry, Western Reserve Joint Fire District and district employees hosted several different stations for the students to attend and do an activity while learning about health and wellness.
Students had the opportunity to talk to Erin Gabriel, a Poland and University of Tennessee alumnus, about her softball career and her education in the Department of Nutrition. All of the students got a photo with Gabriel and the Poland Bulldog mascot as a way to remember the occasion.
“The students get a folder at the end of the day that has hand-outs that correspond to each of the stations so hopefully they take it home to discuss with their families,” said Fedor.
Poland Seminary High School student-athletes volunteered their time to help at each of the stations. The Dobbins students jump roped, tried to juggle, did cup stacking, relay races and several other physical activities.
DAWG Day is something that both the students and staff of Dobbins and PSHS have fun participating in. It’s a program that the school hopes to continue to host and bring awareness to health and wellness in a fun and active way.
