Knitting Guild celebrates with Knit-In
To celebrate World Wide Knit in Public day the Western Reserve Knitting Guild will host a Knit-In at the Canfield library on June 10. Members and guests are encouraged to come and enjoy fellowship from 1-4 p.m. while working on various projects. Members are encouraged to work on the wreath project and are asked to bring two size 5 double pointed needles, size 3 straight or double pointed needles and a tapestry needle. Also you may bring a light snack to be shared with others. Coffee will be provided by the guild. The library is located at 43 W. Main Street in Canfield. This is not a library sponsored activity.
Gathering Place to meet
Lord of Life Church, located at 550 N. Broad Street in Canfield, will host a Gathering Place event on June 12 at 11 a.m. The speaker will be Kitty Kroner from Goodness Grows. This organization is a faith-based nonprofit group that has grown out of commitment of care to work creatively with community groups, congregations, workplaces and individuals to help families grow their way out of poverty. This is a free community outreach social program offered to all senior citizens that takes place on the second Monday of the month every month. Blood drive at the library

Mah Jongg for beginners

Friends of PLYMC general membership meeting
The Friends of PLYMC will host a general membership meeting at the Canfield library on June 14 at 6 p.m., followed at 6:30 p.m. by a presentation of the book “A History of Jewish Youngstown and the Steel Valley.” Authors are Thomas Welsh, Joshua Foster and Gordon F. YWCA of Youngstown seeks art submissions
YWCA of Youngstown is seeking donations of original art for a sale to be offered during the Women Artists: A Celebration! annual art exhibition. Pieces should measure 5 x 7 inches, and be light weight and stiff enough not to bend. Any artist, male or female, age 18 or older may contribute. Artists should affix artist’s name, address, title of work and medium to back. Pieces will be sold for $25. Artwork must be received by June 14.

School district recognized by the Mahoning Valley Safety Council
The Canfield Local School District recently announced that it is the only school district to receive recognition by the Mahoning Valley Safety Council. First issued in 2007, the Joan Kovach Safety Leadership Award recognizes Mahoning Valley businesses and individuals who have effectively transformed their workplaces from high-risk cultures to safety-driven environments funded and supported by executive management. Canfield Schools received Honorable Mention. The award is named in honor of Joan Kovach, a long-time safety advocate and owner of City Machine Technologies, Inc., until her death in 2006.
Canfield Community Concert Band hosts June 27 event
The Canfield Community Concert Band is hosting a new event, the John Philip Sousa Piccolo Palooza, on June 27 at the Austintown Township Park. The band is inviting area piccolo players to join in an epic performance of Sousa’s “Stars and Stripes Forever.” The band has applied to set a world record for number of piccolos playing the piece. The event is also part of the Austintown Fireworks Committee Fourth of July celebration. Players of any age are invited to sign up at the band’s website, www.canfieldccband.org. Mill Creek chapter to meet in June
The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its June 13 meeting at A La Cart Catering in Canfield beginning with networking at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu for the evening includes baked ham, kielbasa with sauerkraut, pierogies, peas and carrots, salad, tomato, pepper and onion salad, and jello. Join New York pop artist Michael Albert at the Canfield library on June 26 at 6 p.m. for a collage workshop where you will create and take home your very own work of art and receive a signed sample from the artist. Parli L’Italiano?

Ancient Egyptians built amazing monuments. Join the Canfield library on June 19 at 2 p.m. for an hour of fun the Egyptian way. Make your name cartouche, construct a pyramid and take part in a wrap a mummy race. There will be crafts and music and snack for all ages. This event is for children of all ages.
Gotta move story time
This event is for children, ages 2-5, who are accompanied by a care-giver. Join the Canfield library every Wednesday in June at 10 and 11:30 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.
Tales to tails
Go to the Canfield library on June 7 at 6 p.m. and read aloud to a registered therapy dog. Readers of all levels and abilities are welcome. This event helps develop reading skills, promotes confidence and encourages a love of reading. Bring a book of your choice. This event is for children in grades kindergarten and up. Dogs are provided by K9’s for Compassion, a community partner of Pet Partners.
Lego my library
Meet at the Canfield library on June 3 from 2:30-3:30 p.m. and June 21 from 6-7 p.m. and enjoy creating Lego designs. Legos will be provided. This event is for children, ages 6 and up.
Build your own app
Build an app at the Canfield library on June 8 at 11 a.m. Learn the basics of programming your own gaming app. Name your game, customize your characters and play the finished product with a friend. You can even play at home. This event is for tweens in grades 4-6. Space is limited and registration is required.
Green Team presents “One Child, One Planet”
Join Peg Flynn and Kim Lewis of the Mahoning County Green Team at the Canfield library on June 27 at 2 p.m. as they present “One Child, One Planet” by Bridget McGovern Llewellyn and Carl R. Sams II during the Summer Reading program. Each page of this book offers suggestions for young and old alike on ways we can appreciate and take care of our precious planet. After reading the story, program participants will create a craft with recovered material and will receive an activity book and information to share with their parents. This program is recommended for children in grades Pre-K through 5.
A visit with Outback Ray
Join the Canfield library for a presentation by Outback Ray and his Amazing Animals on June 13 at 3:30 p.m. This show is exciting and educational and the audience even gets to participate. This event is for children of all ages.
Coffee with the Master Gardeners – Native Plants
Do youwant to know how to enhance your landscape with native plant varieties? If so, join the Mahoning County Master Gardeners for some coffee and refreshments while learning about Ohio’s many native plants. This program will take place on June 19, and starts at 9:30 a.m. with refreshments and continues with an educational program from 10 a.m. until noon. Program speakers Sheila Cubick, Peg Zeleznik and Kary Shively, Mahoning County Master Gardener Volunteers, will demonstrate how native plants can add variety to a landscape. Registration for this event is $15, which includes coffee, a light breakfast and program handouts. Registration can be mailed or dropped off at Mahoning County Extension, located at 490 S. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to take place on July 17
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at the Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 17. The cost is $110 per golfer. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. The 18 hole four-person scramble will be followed by lunch and a Chinese auction and raffle. Star gazing party to be June 3
The fifth annual Bill Pearce Memorial Star Party, sponsored by The Mahoning Valley Astronomical Society, will take place on June 3 from 9-11 p.m. at Austintown Park’s Pogany Pavilion, weather permitting. The event is free and open to the public. If needed, there will be a rain date on June 16 from 9-11 p.m. As you enter the park, turn left on to the first road that will lead to Pogany Pavilion or you will be diverted in the wrong direction. Participants will be viewing the planets and deep space objects through telescopes and binoculars. It is suggested that you bring bug spray and bottled water. GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend. Loghurst Museum to host Trunk and Treasure sale
There will be a Trunk and Treasure sale for the Canfield Heritage Foundation (Loghurst) every first and third Saturday of each month during summer, starting on May 6 (on days that the museum is open) from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. with set-up from 8-9 a.m. The cost is $10 per vehicle. Vendors are able to sell from their pick-ups, trunks of their cars or whatever vehicle they have. They may use a tent/table, etc. in their space. The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest 2017 is seeking nominations from family members or friends regarding their favorite Italian man or Italian woman. The nominees would be considered for the highest honor and if selected would be introduced in person at the festival ceremony on Aug. 4 at 5 p.m. in downtown Youngstown.
