City gets $200K grant for vacant properties

The city will receive a $200,000 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency grant to redevelop vacant properties.
This marks the fourth time the city has applied for the Brownfields Assessment Grant.
The funds will allow the city “to collaborate with community partners to inventory, prioritize, assess and plan for the development of former gas stations on major streets,” according to an EPA news release announcing that 172 communities and organizations had been selected to receive funding to redevelop vacant and unused properties.
The city will use its funding to clean up and redevelop “small petroleum sites scattered throughout the city’s neighborhoods,” Mayor John A. McNally’s office said.

The City of YOUth council will discuss Youngstown City School District’s educational challenges at its inaugural meeting from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Holiday Inn, 7410 South Ave., in Boardman.
The council will address three key points at its meeting: affirming the council’s purpose and vision; becoming informed about the district’s reorganization plan; and brainstorming ideas for efficient transitions for the neighborhood school concept.
CEO Krish Mohip will share the district’s neighborhood school plan with the council. Judge Anthony D’Apolito of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court, and former juvenile court magistrate, will speak briefly on the detriments of failing education systems.

YWCA Youngstown will have an open house from 2 to 5 p.m. today at 1309-1311 Kensington Ave.
Applications are being accepted for the four-bedroom and two-bedroom units. The four-bedroom unit is designed for full accessibility, including a wheelchair-accessible kitchen and bathroom. Other accessible features include wide doorways and halls, accessible kitchen counters and cabinetry, roll-in showers, easy-to-reach light switches and no steps or barriers to entry.
Major funders are Capital Fund to End Homelessness Initiative, city of Youngstown HOME Funds, J. Ford Crandall Memorial Foundation, Howard and Jeanne Karr Charitable Foundation and Youngstown Foundation. The general contractor is DAWN Inc. The architect is Sipp + Tepe Architects LLC.
Loaded gun found
YOUNGSTOWN
Police found a loaded gun Tuesday afternoon after pulling a man over about 3:20 p.m. on Lexington Avenue on the North Side.
Reports said Jarrid Lopez, 22, of Bruce Street, told police the gun was in the center console of the car, which is where police found it. Lopez faces a charge of improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle and taken to the Mahoning County jail.
