NCNW celebrates 142nd birthday of founder

Above, members of the Youngstown Section of the National Council of Negro Women Inc. recently celebrated the 142nd birthday of its founder, Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune with a luncheon at Kravitz’s Deli in Fellows Riverside Garden. Dr. Bethune founded the council in 1935 and was a policy adviser to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Mrs. Roosevelt and President Harry Truman. She also founded Bethune Cookman University, the United Negro College Fund and the Association for African American Life and History. The president of the Youngstown section of the organization is Angela Pickett. Meetings take place the second Saturday of each month at the McGuffey Centre and will resume in September.
