The Pride Youngstown parade and festival is set from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday downtown, and Mike McGiffin, downtown events and citywide special projects director, alerts the public about the streets that will be closed during the parade and festival.

During the parade, Vindicator Square from West Federal Street to Market Street and West Federal from Vindicator Square to Central Square will be closed. Emergency vehicle traffic will be maintained.

The parade will head east down Federal to Vindicator Square. When the parade is complete by 12:30 p.m., those streets will reopen to vehicular traffic.

The festival is from 12:30 to 8 p.m. These streets will be closed during that time: East Federal from Central Square to Walnut Street and South Champion Street from Commerce to Boardman streets. Emergency vehicle traffic will be maintained. Those streets will reopen to regular traffic early Sunday.

$428K federal grant

GIRARD

The Girard Fire Department has received a $428,572 federal grant. The grant, from the Department of Homeland Security, will supplement the estimated $450,000 cost of a new rescue truck; city money will cover the remainder of the expense.

“It’s very competitive, so we’re more than happy to receive it,” said Girard Fire Chief Ken Bornemiss. “It will go a long way in this city, because we have a lot of older equipment.”

U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan of Howland, D-13th, said in a news release, “This is fantastic news for the firefighters who put their lives on the line every day to protect the local community. It is vital that we provide funding to ensure local fire departments have adequate funding for the resources they need to keep our community safe.”

Police, EMS levy

LIBERTY

Township voters will decide on a five-year renewal of a 1.5-mill police and EMS levy.

Trustees voted during a special meeting Thursday to place the measure on November’s ballot for approval. Renewal of the tax would generate $308,662 annually and cost the owner of a $100,000 home $52.50 per year, according to the Trumbull County Auditor’s office.

Also, trustees voted to hire Daniel Superak as a full-time patrolman earning $15.28 hourly.

Superak starts Sunday and will be on the police roster for a one-year probationary period.
