Greensboro Green 15, Youngstown Knightline 4

GREENSBORO, N.C.

A small strike zone proved more problematic for Youngstown Knightline than it did for Greensboro Green. Knightline batters walked 10 times, but managed only one — a single by Kole Klasic — in a tournament-opening loss Wednesday. Klasic’s hit also drove in a run. Knightline pitchers walked six batters and its defense committed six errors. Knightline manager Tommy Otto said he expects his team will play much better tonight at 8 in an elimination game. Otto said Tom Pitko will get the start for the locals.

Mason 13, Poland 5

IRONTON

Mason built a big lead early and eventually eliminated Poland. Anthony Perry and Nate Williams each had two hits for Poland and Ian Francis scored twice and drove in two runs. Christian Colosimo also had two RBIs. Poland finished the year at 26-10.

Metro Ice wins first-round series

Nick Charnas’ RBI single provided the only run of the game in the bottom of the seventh Tuesday and clinched a first-round series win as Metro Ice beat PI&I Expres 1-0 on Tuesday in Game 3 of a best-of-three series. Matt Schultz pitched a three-hit shutout and struck out 12. Jake Mull took the hard-luck loss for PI&I Express. Charnas, Larry Goist, Mark Herron and Marcus Masters each had a hit for Metro Ice. PI&I took Game 2 5-2 on Monday to tie the series at 1. PI&I Express scored on singles by Jay Lowry and Brandon Carver in the first inning, and a single by Andrew Robbins in the second. Shawn Matsko earned the win for PI&I Express. He pitched a complete game and struck out eight. Metro Ice collected six hits. Vitto Petrillo and Masters each collected multiple hits for Metro Ice. Nick Capogreco and Ryan Trimbur each drove in a run. PI&I Express had seven hits. Tommy Jackson and Andrew Robbins each had multiple hits.
