YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown Board of Education has recommended Andre Cowling, executive director of New Leaders for New Schools of Baltimore, as district superintendent.

During a special meeting Wednesday night, the board voted 4-2 to recommend Cowling to CEO Krish Mohip for hire.

If Cowling doesn’t accept, the board recommends Martha Hasselbusch, former South Central Schools superintendent; and if she doesn’t accept, Diane Longstreth, Maplewood Heights curriculum instructor, is their next choice.

Board President Brenda Kimble and members Jackie Adair, Michael Murphy and Ronald Shadd voted for the candidates. Members Dario Hunter and Corinne Sanderson voted against. Member Jerome Williams was absent.

Mohip has control over the district under Ohio House Bill 70, which put a chief executive officer, overseen by a state-appointed academic-distress commission, in control of the district.

Earlier this month, Mohip selected Joseph Meranto, Choffin Career and Technical Center executive director, as interim superintendent, replacing Stephen Stohla, who served since July 2015. Stohla’s contract was not renewed.

District spokeswoman Denise Dick said Mohip will consider the board’s recommendation, but is disappointed it didn’t interview Meranto, who he says has long-standing knowledge of the district and community.
