Randy Strader, of Salem, took first place in the shot put and second place in discus at the Northeast Ohio Senior Olympics, at Girard High School.

Strader is in the 70-74 year old division and has been a member of the United States Masters Track & Field team since 1984.

State College holds on to spike Scrappers, 3-2

STATE COLLEGE, Pa.

Will Latcham struck Hosea Nelson out with the bases loaded to end the game, leading the State College Spikes to a 3-2 win over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on Tuesday night in New York-Penn League action.

State College starter Sam Tewes (3-3) went 71/3 innings, allowing two runs and six hits to get the win. He also struck out five and walked one. Gregori Vasquez (1-2) went 51/3 innings, allowing two runs and four hits while striking out four.

The Spikes (19-15) started the scoring in the second inning. After leading off the inning with a single, Joshua Lopez advanced to second on a groundout and then scored on a single by Yariel Gonzalez.

Trailing 3-1, the Scrappers (21-14) cut into the deficit in the eighth inning when Samad Taylor hit an RBI single, scoring Jason Rodriguez.

After a day off today, the Scrappers return home Thursday for a six-game homestand against Williamsport and Batavia at Eastwood Field in Niles.

Thursday’s game against the Crosscutters is set for 7:05 p.m.

Penske inks Keselowski to multi-year extension

MOORESVILLE, N.C.

Team Penske has locked up 2012 NASCAR Cup champion Brad Keselowski with a multi-year extension.

The 33-year-old Keselowski has driven for Penske throughout his 10-year career in NASCAR’s top series, notching 23 wins and the series title five years ago. His crew chief with the No. 2 Ford, Paul Wolfe, has also agreed to a multiyear extension with Penske. Terms of the agreements were not disclosed.

“In the time that Brad has driven for Team Penske, he has risen to the top echelon of stars in NASCAR,” owner Roger Penske said Tuesday. “Brad and Paul have established a terrific, winning combination and they are both real leaders within our team.”

Keselowski has two Cup wins so far this season, at Atlanta and Martinsville, and is sixth in the points standings.

“Roger and everyone at Team Penske have given me everything we need to win championships at the highest levels of NASCAR,” said Keselowski. “As I have said all along, Team Penske is where I want to be and I am thrilled to continue with the organization well into the future. I have a lot of years left in the sport and I truly feel our best years are ahead of us.”

Police: Ex-Cowboys WR misidentified

OXNARD, Calif.

Former Dallas Cowboys receiver Lucky Whitehead’s identity was falsely used in a shoplifting arrest, police in his home state of Virginia said Tuesday.

Prince William County police said they were confident the man charged in a case involving $40 worth of stolen food and drink from a convenience store in June wasn’t Whitehead. The Cowboys released him Monday after reports that he was arrested and subsequently cited for missing a court hearing.

Whitehead’s agent, Dave Rich, contended that his client wasn’t in Virginia at the time of the reported arrest. Police said they are seeking the person who used the identity of Whitehead, whose given name is Rodney Darnell Whitehead Jr.

Police said the person arrested June 22 didn’t have an ID but provided a name, date of birth and social security number matching Whitehead’s given name. Officers checked a photo in Virginia’s database of driver’s licenses.

“Officers acted in good faith that, at the time, the man in custody was the same man matching the information provided,” Sgt. Jonathan Perok said. “The police department is currently seeking the identity of the man involved in the incident.”
