Valley's unemployment rate up in June

The nonseasonally adjusted local unemployment in the Mahoning Valley increased slightly in June to 6.6 percent, up from 6.2 percent reported in July 2016.

The number of unemployed increased by 1,000 year-over-year to 16,200, and the number of employed decreased by 400 to 229,900, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services said Tuesday.

The civilian labor force – the total of employed and unemployed – increased by 1,000 to 246,000.

In Mahoning County, the unemployment rate went up to 6.6 percent in June from 5.9 percent the previous June.

The number of unemployed went up by 700 to 7,000, and the number of employed remained unchanged at 99,800. The civilian labor force increased 700 to 106,800.

In Columbiana County, the unemployment rate dropped to 6.1 percent from 6.4 percent reported in June 2016.

The number of unemployed in the county dropped 200 to 2,900, and the number of employed dropped by 300 to 45,200. The civilian labor force in the county dropped 400 to 48,200.

In Trumbull County, the unemployment rate went up to 6.8 percent in June from 6.3 percent reported in June 2016.

The number of unemployed increased by 400 to 6,200, and the number of employed decreased by 100 to 84,900. The civilian labor force increased by 400 to 91,100.

Ohio’s unemployment rate was 5 percent in June, up from 4.9 percent in May. Ohio’s nonagricultural wage and salary employment increased 11,500 over the month, from a revised 5,517,300 in May to 5,528,800 in June. The number of workers unemployed in Ohio in June was 291,000, up 5,000 from 286,000 in May.

The state saw a major increase of 4,000 manufacturing jobs in June and 6,100 government jobs.

The U.S. unemployment rate for June was 4.4 percent, 0.1 percentage points higher than in May, and 0.5 percentage points lower than in June 2016.
