School board votes to hire treasurer

BOARDMAN

The Boardman school board voted unanimously Monday night to hire Nick Ciarniello as school district treasurer.

Ciarniello is a Mahoning Valley native and has several years of government auditing experience, in addition to his Ohio School Treasurer license. He will start his new position Aug. 14.

Boardman has been searching for a permanent treasurer since January, when Greg Slemons resigned. Superintendent Tim Saxton said, “I am impressed by his enthusiasm and fiscal knowledge and believe he will support the district’s goal of fiscal responsibility.”

Ciarniello is a graduate of Youngstown State University’s business administration program, with an accounting degree, Ciarniello said, “I look forward to being a part of such a strong leadership team as they continue to move the district forward.”

Fatal crash in Fowler

A Boardman man died Monday morning after crashing a tractor-trailer in the township.

First-responders found Thomas Detwiler, 64, dead at the scene. The crash happened about 8 a.m. at state Route 11 near state Route 305, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. The accident is under investigation.

Man shot in hand, leg

WARREN

A city man, 24, was shot in the hand and leg while in the area of Southern Boulevard and Raider Path at 7:40 a.m. Sunday.

A man, 30, of Warren, said he was driving on West Market Street near Southern Boulevard when the victim flagged him down, said he was shot and needed help.

The man said he was reluctant, but when he saw the victim’s wound, drove him to Trumbull Memorial Hospital.

He was still in the lobby of the hospital when police arrived. Police did not indicate whether they spoke with the victim or not. He was described as having a major injury.

Woman’s death probed

Township police are investigating the death of a woman by gunshot Sunday.

According to a police report, officers were sent to the Bob Evans restaurant on California Avenue at 1:42 p.m. in reference to two gunshots fired in the parking lot.

Witnesses told police they heard two gunshots come from inside a vehicle in which a woman was sitting alone.

The 49-year-old woman of Youngstown was found with a gunshot wound to the head and was declared dead at an area hospital.

Intimidation charge

Stephen Ault, 61, of Southern Boulevard faces a felony intimidation charge, accused of threatening the township police officer who cited him for disorderly conduct and who gave him a ride home Sunday.

According to a police report, an officer observed Ault sitting behind the police department’s fuel pumps, located on the township government campus on Market Street, about 9 p.m.

While officers gave him a ride home, Ault reportedly told them, “Don’t take me home, take me to go get beer first.” He then proceeded to threaten an officer, according to the report.

Ault was taken to the Mahoning County jail and is scheduled to appear in Mahoning County Area Court here today for arraignment.

Investigating thefts

Police are investigating numerous thefts reported by residents of the Newport Glen neighborhood off Market Street on Friday.

According to one report, a Ford Escape and Toyota Camry were stolen from a Jennette Drive driveway.

Additionally, thefts from vehicles were reported by numerous victims on Jennette, Shadyside Drive and Windsor Road. Police observed that several vehicles in the neighborhood appeared to have been ransacked. Victims reported loose change, a pruning saw, phone chargers, a tablet and other electronic accessories were stolen from the various vehicles.
