AUSTINTOWN

Township trustees on Monday discussed nuisance properties and bricks from the demolished Austintown Middle School building.

Trustees cited more than 30 nuisance properties specified by the zoning department, a majority of which have complaints pertaining to overgrown grass and debris.

Zoning Inspector Darren Crivelli said the department has cited more than 300 properties this year. “We have people here with houses that don’t have water – that don’t have electricity,” Crivelli said.

In other business, Trustee Rick Stauffer said the township has received many inquiries about the remaining bricks from the demolished Austintown Middle School building, but will not be responsible for handing them out.

Bricks will be available to the public on a first-come, first-served basis, sometime in August. Schools facility manager Rick Zimmerman said a date to do so isn’t set yet, but it will be well advertised when it is determined.

The fifth annual First Night Out is next Tuesday from 5 to 9 p.m. at Austintown Township Park. The national observance aims to connect residents with members of local safety and law enforcement.

Austintown Fitch High School Choir will perform at Woodside Community Garden Aug. 6 at 6 p.m. The event is a fundraiser for the choir’s trip to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Half of the proceeds will go toward the trip, and the other half to the garden.

Buffalo Wild Wings, 6000 Mahoning Ave., donated $1,442 to the township’s Fourth of July fireworks fund. The restaurant set aside 15 percent of its sales during the township’s fireworks display earlier this month for that purpose.

The township’s Sept. 11 meeting time was changed from 6 p.m. to noon.
