Scappers rally in the ninth inning

Auburn, NY

Despite four Auburn Doubledays’ errors, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers had to rally for a run in the top of the ninth inning to pick up their seventh straight win over Auburn, 5-4 on Friday night at Falcon Park.

Mahoning Valley started the game by getting the first two runners on base on back to back errors by the Doubledays. Following the two errors, a passed ball would allow Austen Wade to score for the early 1-0 lead.

The Scrappers would add on three runs thanks to two more Auburn errors in the top of the fifth inning. After Hosea Nelson doubled to start the inning, Ernie Clement singled to drive him in. Wade then lined out to pitcher Matt DeRosier with Clement at first. DeRosier tried to get the double play at first but threw the ball up the right field line to allow Clement to go from first to third. Two batters later, Nolan Jones single to drive in Clement. Samad Taylor would also score on another error by Omar Meregildo, his second of the game.

Boasson Hagen wins Tour de France stage

SALON-DE-PROVENCE, FRANCE

After two second-place finishes, Edvald Boasson Hagen finally got a stage victory at this Tour de France. Chris Froome and the other top riders took it easy, saving themselves for their last big fight this weekend.

Boasson Hagen, from Norway, caught the right breakaways on the longest stage and used all of his guile and strength to hold off chasers in the final section on Friday.

Boasson Hagen was part of a 20-man group that Froome and Team Sky gave freedom to escape from the peloton because none of them presented a threat to his overall lead. After two energy-sapping days of climbs in the Alps, Froome and his rivals had their sights set instead on the time trial on Saturday in Marseille that will determine the podium order before the race ends in Paris on Sunday.

Bengals suspend Jones for one game

CINCINNATI

Bengals cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones has been suspended for the regular-season opening game after his role in an altercation at a downtown Cincinnati hotel earlier this year.

Jones pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge from the January incident, the latest in a history of off-the-field legal issues for the NFL veteran. The NFL says the suspension was for a violation of its personal conduct policy.

Police said Jones kicked and used head-butting as he was arrested for allegedly assaulting a hotel employee.

Jones can appeal the suspension within three days. Otherwise, he will be eligible to return to the active roster on Sept. 11 following the Bengals’ opener against the Baltimore Ravens. Jones may participate in all preseason practices and games.
