United Community Financial Corp., the holding company of Home Savings Bank, announced that Gary Small, president and CEO of the company, will present at the Keefe, Bruyette and Woods 2017 Community Bank Investor Conference in New York City.

Small will be joined by Matt Garrity, the company’s executive vice president. The conference will take place at 2 p.m. Aug. 1.

Subaru donates blankets and more

Representatives from Boardman Subaru alongside the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society donated blankets and arts-and-craft kits Friday to cancer patients at Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley Beeghly Campus on Market Street.

The gifts are given as part of Subaru’s “Love to Care” campaign.

Gaming education

AUSTINTOWN

State and local officials will join with Hollywood Gaming Mahoning Valley for the American Gaming Association’s Responsible Gaming Education Week beginning July 31. The event draws attention to problem gambling.

Tony Frabbiele, the general manager of Hollywood Gaming, and other casino staff will be joined by local officials Trustee Jim Davis, Police Chief Bob Gavalier, and Mahoning County Commissioner David Ditzler.

The event’s kickoff will begin at 11:30 a.m. at Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley Race Course, 655 N. Canfield-Niles Road. Those interested in participating should contact Jacob Rosenberger at 330-505-8727.

Jobless rate up

COLUMBUS

State officials say Ohio’s unemployment rate rose slightly in June from the previous month and remains higher than the national rate.

The state unemployment rate rose from 4.9 percent in May to 5 percent last month. Ohio’s unemployment rate in June 2016 was 4.9 percent.

The national rate was 4.4 percent in June compared with 4.3 percent the previous month. The state Department of Job and Family Services says Ohio’s nonagricultural wage and salary employment increased by 11,500 from May to June.

There were job gains last month in sectors that include manufacturing, construction, financial activities, trade transportation and utilities, health and education services, and other services. Those gains exceeded losses in leisure and hospitality, information and professional and business- services sectors.

Wells Fargo ordered to reinstate whistleblower

NEW YORK

Wells Fargo is being ordered to reinstate a branch manager it fired in 2011. The employee had tried to blow the whistle on the bank’s growing sales practices scandal. The Department of Labor ordered Wells Fargo to pay $577,500 in back wages as well.
