Children spent a week of their summer learning the ins and outs of the theater world during the third annual Drama Camp at the Poland library on July 10-14.
Jen Kuzcek, a youth services librarian with the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning Valley, instructed the Drama Camp. There were around 25 children, from fourth- to ninth-grade, who signed up to take part in the program.
While many of the children who participated in Drama Camp were new, there were several children who have come back for the second time.
“It’s really fun because you get to learn how to act. This is my second year doing it because I really liked the first year doing ‘Rap-Punzel,’” said Kaleb Dettmer, who is the stage manager for the second year in a row.
Kaleb and his brother, Connor (who plays Pinnochio), enjoyed their time at the camp. Kaleb likes being the stage manager because he likes to help people when they forget their lines.
The week-long program allowed the children to learn about theater and performing. The costumes were provided, but the children made their own props and backdrops. The props were made from things like construction paper, cardboard and tape.
“My favorite part was all the reading because I like school and reading,” said Maleah Jacobs who participated in camp for the first time.
Jacobs plans on keeping her folder full of everything the children learned throughout the week. She hopes to spend more time acting and thinks about trying out for a play when she gets to high school.
The play the children learned was “The Three Little Pigs in Fantasyland,” which was a twist on “The Three Little Pigs” fairy tale.
The final day of camp on July 14, the children performed the play for friends and family who wished to attend. There were snacks, books and other items related to the performance set out for the guests to enjoy.
