Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.’s Epsilon Mu Omega Chapter of Youngstown is donating children’s books for Youngstown City School District social workers to help students.

Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority will present the books to Lori Kopp, chief of student services, at 1 p.m. Monday inside the I.L. Ward Building, 20 W. Wood St.

The sorority partners with the National Alliance on Mental Illness and the books deal with parents, or children afflicted with mental illnesses due to bullying. The books are for students aged 8 to 18.

Mayor Thomas Scarnecchia has called for special city council meetings at 5 p.m. today and Monday. The meetings, which will include discussions on a possible increase in the license-plate fees and using the Regional Income Tax Agency for city income-tax collections, will take place in council chambers, 34 W. State St.

Taken into custody

AUSTINTOWN

Police responded to a call Wednesday of a man in his garage screaming and jumping repeatedly. Michael Dickman, 29, of Frederick Street, was reportedly found by police in his driveway in a confused state, yelling loudly and shadow boxing.

He was taken into custody by police on an active warrant of inducing panic, according to reports, which also state Dickman was resuscitated from an overdose on June 5. A court date is set for Monday.

Free seminar

AUSTINTOWN

Mahoning County District Board of Health will host a free seminar – Issues of Public Health Concern: Radon, Biohazards and Sanitation in Food Facilities – from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Austintown Fitch High School cafeteria, 4560 Falcon Drive.

A variety of public-health issues of interest to the public and individuals employed in the food-service industry will be discussed.

Registration is from 8 to 8:30 a.m. Residential radon risks will be from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m.; how to protect yourself from diseases (Biohazard Levels 1 -4) will be from 9:45 to 11 a.m.; food safety in schools will be from 11 a.m. to noon; cleaning dishwashers and hard surfaces will be from 1 to 2:15 p.m.; and pest management in restaurants will be from 2:15 to 3:15 p.m.

Boil-water alert lifted

The city on Thursday lifted the boil-water alert for these areas: First, Second, Third and Fifth streets and all side streets. The advisory was issued two days ago because of a waterline break in the city that caused a drop in pressure and temporary water loss.
