Board OKs spending

YOUNGSTOWN

The city’s board of control approved spending $11,954 to beautify the South Avenue corridor. The board voted Thursday to spend $8,000 for 24 concrete flower pots and $3,954 for a “Welcome to the South Ave. Corridor” sign that will be erected near the Himrod Avenue Expressway ramp. The work will start in August.

New contract

YOUNGSTOWN

The Mahoning County commissioners accepted a fact finder’s report between Mahoning County Clerk of Courts Anthony Vivo and American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local, Ohio Council 9 and Local 3956.

The previous contract expired Dec. 31 and continuing negotiations led to the fact-finding process. The new contract, which affects about 57 employees in the clerk’s office, extends for three years from Jan. 1, 2017 to Dec. 31, 2019.

Road restrictions

LIBERTY

Liberty Street under Interstate 80 will be closed from 2 to 10 a.m. today for bridge work. The detour will be Motor Inn Drive to state Route 193 (Belmont Avenue).

Additionally, Liberty Street between Motor Inn and Belmont Avenue is restricted to one lane. That restriction will last until late August.

This work is part of a $91.5 million project to widen I-80 between state Route 11 and Route 193. The entire project is scheduled to be completed by late July 2018.

Road to close

HOWLAND

North Road, between Atlantic and East Market streets, will be closed from Monday until July 29, due to culvert replacement by the Trumbull County Engineer’s office. The recommended detour route is west on Atlantic, south on Genessee Avenue and east on East Market.

Giveaway planned

YOUNGSTOWN

The East Side Crime Watch, 1001 Oak St., on the corner of Fruit Street, will host a food and clothing giveaway from 10 a.m. to noon today. Recipients are asked to bring identification and bags.

Summer tour stop

YOUNGSTOWN

Ohio State University Extension’s Farms and Gardens Summer Tour Series stops next week at the gardens at Chaney High School and Rayen Early College Intermediate School.

“Local Flavor 2017, Growing Local Foods: Urban Farms and Gardens Summer Tour Series” will be at the schools, both housed at Chaney, 731 S. Hazelwood Ave., at 6 p.m. Monday.

Staff from Ohio State University Extension’s Mahoning County office as well as trained master gardener volunteers will inform attendees about growing practices, helpful tips, soils, organic production and more.

Those attending should bring lawn chairs, a notepad and any weeds, insects or diseased plants to have the experts diagnose garden ailments.
