Boardman’s Vivo wins Columbus Junior Open

PATASKALA

Boardman High School junior Jenna Vivo, 17, won the Columbus Junior Open, a Hurricane Junior Golf Tour event, after shooting 74-73—147 at Cumberland Trail Golf Club.

Vivo’s next tournament will be the 17-U division of The Vindicator’s Greatest Golfer of the Valley Junior Finals, set for Friday (Squaw Creek) and Saturday (Avalon Lakes).

Vivo is a three-time Greatest Juniors champion.

Newgarden races to Toronto IndyCar win

TORONTO

Josef Newgarden raced to his second Toronto IndyCar title in three years Sunday, dominating on the streets surrounding Exhibition Place.

Newgarden came out in front on Lap 25 after a crash by Tony Kanaan caused a caution and maintained an advantage of over two seconds for the majority of the rest of the race. The American has five career victories, also winning in Alabama in April.

Newgarden gave Team Penske its 193rd victory, the most of any team.

Alexander Rossi was second for his first podium finish of the year and best since winning the 2016 Indianapolis 500.

James Hinchcliffe finished third in his hometown race for the second straight year.

Hamilton wins British GP, nears F1 points lead

SILVERSTONE, England

Lewis Hamilton slashed Sebastian Vettel’s Formula One championship lead to one point by winning a record-equaling fifth British Grand Prix on Sunday as his title rival was left reeling by a late puncture.

Vettel was in third heading into the penultimate lap at Silverstone only to see his front left tire shred — immediately after Ferrari teammate Kimi Raikkonen’s car experienced the same fate.

Raikkonen still made the podium by replacing Vettel in third, but the championship leader fell back to seventh as the 25-point lead he held over Hamilton going into the 10th round of the 20-race season was all but wiped out on an overcast afternoon.

It capped a dominant weekend for Hamilton in front of his home fans and the three-time world champion was assisted by Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas making up seven places to join him on the podium after finishing second.

Bike problem nearly derails Tour leader

LE PUY-EN-VELAY, France

Chris Froome has fought back from a bike breakdown to cling onto his race leader’s yellow jersey on the tricky Stage 15 of the Tour de France, won with a courageous solo breakaway by Bauke Mollema of the Netherlands.

Three-time Tour champion Froome suffered a back-wheel problem at the worst possible time, just as the AG2R team of close rival Romain Bardet was picking up the pace ahead of the last big climb of the day, an 8.3-kilometer (5-mile) slog up the steep col de Peyra Taillade — scaled for the very first time by the Tour.

By the time Froome had stopped, taken a wheel off his teammate Michal Kwiatkowski and got going again, Bardet’s group was already way ahead. Froome had to work furiously to catch them.

Texans running back Foreman arrested

AUSTIN, Texas

Houston Texans rookie running back D’Onta Foreman has been arrested on drug and weapons charges.

A statement from the University of Texas Police Department in Austin said officers answered a report of the smell of marijuana outside a campus dormitory about 12:30 a.m. Sunday. They found three occupied vehicles with marijuana in each and a firearm in one of them. Foreman was among those in the vehicles and was identified by police as the owner of the firearm.

Foreman was arrested on charges of unlawful carrying of a weapon and marijuana possession, both misdemeanors, and released on bond.
