Clothing allowance

YOUNGSTOWN

Service-connected disabled veterans may be eligible for an annual clothing allowance of $779.62 if their clothing has been damaged by prosthetics or orthopedic devices, such as a wheelchair, or if skin-condition medication damages clothes.

To receive benefits, submit Veterans Affairs Form 10-8678, Application for Clothing Allowance, to the prosthetic representative at Louis Stokes Veterans Affairs Medical Center Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center, 10701 East Blvd., Cleveland 44106, by Aug. 1. For assistance with the application process, potentially eligible veterans are urged to contact the Mahoning County Veterans Service Commission at 330-740-2450 as soon as possible in order to meet the Aug. 1 submission deadline.

Women’s conference

COLUMBUS

The 2017 Ohio Women Veterans Conference, presented by the Ohio Department of Veterans Services, will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 12 at Ohio State University Union, 1739 N. High St. Ohio is home to 67,000 women veterans.

Registration is required. Visit www.eventbrite.com. With lunch the cost is $19.35; without lunch, it is free.

Transportation to the conference by chartered bus is provided by the Mahoning County Veterans Service Commission. For bus reservation and information, call 330-740-2450.

Participants can meet women veterans from World War II, the Korean and Vietnam wars to present-day conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

They also will be able to network with fellow veterans; learn about the benefits, resources and opportunities earned with their military service; and receive information about Ohio’s fast track to jobs and education program for veterans.

Team celebrates 100 years

COLUMBUS

On Tuesday, the Ohio National Guard’s 37th Infantry Brigade Combat Team will celebrate 100 years of service to the state and nation. Called “Buckeye” since its birth, the 37th has had elements stationed in 126 communities across Ohio and eight of its soldiers have earned the Medal of Honor.

Picnic for women

AKRON

Northeast Ohio Women Veterans Unit 21 of Military Women Across the Nation recently hosted a picnic at the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky for its female veterans.

The organization also conducted its state meeting, which enabled women veterans to learn more about the Ohio Veterans Home. Sandra Puskarcik from the Ohio Department of Veteran Services informed the women about her role with the ODVS and what they do for the women who have served in the armed forces.

Military Women Across the Nation was originally established in 1979 as WAVES National. The organization’s mission is to keep all military women informed of benefits associated with their military service; keep female veterans connected while preserving our common history; and to provide opportunities for women in tomorrow’s armed forces through networking and social service with and for other female veterans.

This organization is open to any woman who honorably served in any branch of the armed forces. People interested in joining may call Jennifer Baun at 314-803-8643.
