AROUND THE HORN Saturday’s other MLB games

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Athletics 5, Indians 3

OAKLAND, CALIF.

Khris Davis hit his 25th homer, a two-run shot in the ninth inning that lifted the Athletics. Rookie third baseman Matt Chapman homered twice and scored three runs while Rajai Davis added an RBI single for the A’s, who have won two straight over the AL Central-leading Indians since the All-Star break. Cleveland All-Star reliever Andrew Miller (3-3) walked Yonder Alonso to begin the ninth. After Bryan Shaw was brought in to replace Miller, Davis worked a full count then fouled off a pitch before lining a two-run home run over the wall in right center. It is the A’s seventh walk-off win of the season and the second game-ending hit this year by Davis. Ryan Madson (2-4) retired three batters for the win.

Yankees 4, Red Sox 1, 16 innings

BOSTON

Didi Gregorius lined a go-ahead single in the 16th inning and the Yankees outlasted the Red Sox in the longest game between the bitter rivals at Fenway Park since 1966. Matt Holliday hit a tying home run off Boston closer Craig Kimbrel in the ninth, and it took 5 hours, 50 minutes and 512 pitches to finish. That is, if it’s really over — the Red Sox put the game under protest after a bizarre play on the bases involving Holliday in the 11th. Both teams burned through their bullpens, and the relievers won’t get much rest. The Yankees and the AL East-leading Red Sox are set for a day-night doubleheader today. Boston starter Chris Sale struck out 13 in 72/3 scoreless innings of three-hit ball. Yankees starter Luis Severino allowed one run and four hits in seven innings. Ben Heller (1-0) went two innings. Doug Fister (0-3) gave up three runs in the 16th.

Mariners 4, White Sox 3

CHICAGO

Nelson Cruz and Kyle Seager homered, and the sloppy Mariners beat the White Sox for their third straight victory. Seattle committed three errors, and Felix Hernandez (5-3) plunked Jose Abreu twice and threw a wild pitch. But Cruz’s two-run shot off Anthony Swarzak (4-3) — just the second homer allowed by the reliever this season — made it 4-3 Mariners in the sixth, and their bullpen shut down the lowly White Sox the rest of the way. Steve Cishek, Tony Zych and Nick Vincent each pitched a scoreless inning before Edwin Diaz finished for his 15th save in 18 chances. The right-hander struck out Abreu with runners on first and second for the final out. Diaz also got the save in Seattle’s 4-2 win in the series opener Friday night.

Twins 4, Astros 2

HOUSTON

Brian Dozier homered and Eddie Rosario’s two-run double in the sixth inning lifted the Twins. The game was tied entering the sixth when a walk by Miguel Sano and consecutive singles by Max Kepler and Robbie Grossman loaded the bases with no outs in the inning to chase Joe Musgrove (4-8). He was replaced by Tony Sipp, who was greeted with the double by Rosario that put Minnesota up 4-2. That ball was deflected by Sipp and rolled just out of reach of a diving Jose Altuve and into shallow right field. Ervin Santana (11-6) allowed five hits and two runs in six innings for the win and Brandon Kintzler pitched a scoreless ninth for his 25th save.

Rangers 1, Royals 0

KANSAS CITY, MO.

Shin-Soo Choo flared a lazy fly ball down the left-field line with one out in the ninth inning, driving in the only run off Danny Duffy and giving the Rangers a victory over the Royals. Duffy and Rangers counterpart Cole Hamels matched each other through seven innings, neither bending before Hamels finally departed for reliever Jose Leclerc (2-2) with two out in the eighth. Duffy (5-6) began the ninth and gave up a weak single to Jonathan Lucroy. After pinch-runner Joey Gallo took second on a sacrifice bunt by Delino DeShields, Choo got just enough wood on Duffy’s 91st pitch to drop a fly ball in front of left fielder Alex Gordon and score the game’s only run. Leclerc walked the leadoff man in the ninth, but Alex Claudio struck out Eric Hosmer and got Salvador Perez to ground into a double play to earn his third save and second in as many nights.

Tigers 11, Blue Jays 1

DETROIT

Michael Fulmer pitched eight strong innings and J.D. Martinez drove in five runs as the Tigers went on to crush the Blue Jays. Nicholas Castellanos, Miguel Cabrera and Martinez homered for the Tigers. Fulmer (10-6) won his fourth straight start, giving up one run and two hits while walking one and striking out three. Kendrys Morales had a clean single in the second inning, but the Blue Jays didn’t get another hit until Troy Tulowitzki’s infield single in the eighth. Francisco Liriano (5-5) took the loss, allowing five runs, three hits and four walks in two-plus innings. He struck out two.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Dodgers 7, Marlins 1

MIAMI

Cody Bellinger became the first Dodgers rookie to hit for the cycle and Alex Wood became the first Dodgers pitcher in more than a century to win his first 11 decisions in a season, helping the NL West leaders beat the Marlins for their eighth straight victory. Bellinger singled in the first inning, hit a two-run homer in the third, added an RBI double in the fourth and hit his second career triple on the first pitch of the seventh. His triple off Nick Wittgren barely cleared the glove of right fielder Giancarlo Stanton, who tried to making a running backhanded catch. Wood (11-0) struck out 10 in six scoreless innings, allowed only four baserunners and lowered his ERA to 1.56 in 16 games this year. An angry Yasiel Puig took several steps toward the mound after he was nearly hit by a pitch from Miami’s Jose Urena in the first inning. Puig hit two home runs in Los Angeles’ win Friday, including a go-ahead three-run homer in the ninth inning.

Brewers 3, Phillies 2

MILWAUKEE

Travis Shaw hit his 20th home run of the season leading off the bottom of the eighth inning and the Brewers edged the Phillies. Shaw hit the center-field scoreboard when he crushed a 1-1 pitch right down the middle from Joaquin Benoit (1-4). The victory put the Brewers (52-41) a season-high 11 games over .500. Jacob Barnes (2-1) picked up the win when got out of jam in the top of the eighth thanks to a slick double play after walking two batters.

Mets 9, Rockies 3

NEW YORK

Jay Bruce and pitcher Seth Lugo homered during an early barrage that sent the Mets past Colorado for their second straight lopsided victory over the reeling Rockies out of the All-Star break. Jose Reyes also went deep and Lucas Duda had a two-run double as New York took full advantage of an injury that knocked wild Colorado starter Tyler Chatwood from the game in the first inning. Lugo (4-2) worked into the seventh with a big lead, but Mets slugger Yoenis Cespedes left early after slamming his right knee into the ground while trying to make a sliding catch. Chatwood (6-11) got only one out and threw just five of 19 pitches for strikes while walking three of the five batters he faced. After giving up Bruce’s three-run shot to straightaway center field, the right-hander was checked on the mound by manager Bud Black and a trainer. Chatwood made three wide practice pitches and was replaced by lefty Chris Rusin, who got all the time he needed to warm up on the mound.

Braves 8, Diamondbacks 5

ATLANTA

Little-used Lane Adams drove in three runs with a pinch-hit, bases-loaded double in the sixth, giving Atlanta the lead, and the Braves beat the struggling Diamondbacks. Adams was hitting only .214 in 28 at-bats before his double to the left-field wall off Randall Delgado (1-2) cleared the bases. Arizona led 3-2 before Atlanta’s four-run inning. The Diamondbacks have lost seven of eight and 10 of 13. Brandon Phillips had three hits, including a homer. Ender Inciarte also had three hits. After Arizona scored two runs in the eighth to cut Atlanta’s lead to 7-5, Jace Peterson hit a pinch-hit homer off Jorge De La Rosa into the top level of seats in right field in the bottom of the inning.

Nationals 10, Reds 7

CINCINNATI

Anthony Rendon hit his second career grand slam and added a two-run homer, and the Nationals overcame Scooter Gennett’s four-RBI night to hold on to beat the Reds. Ryan Raburn homered to lead off the seventh, sparking a seven-run outburst capped by Rendon’s grand slam for his 18th homer of the season and a 10-0 lead. The Reds bounced back for two runs in the eighth inning and five in the ninth, three on Gennett’s 16th homer of the season, before Matt Grace logged his second save in two nights.

INTERLEAGUE

Cubs 10, Orioles 3

BALTIMORE

Making his first appearance at Camden Yards since he was traded by Baltimore four years ago, Jake Arrieta settled down after a wild start to hold the Orioles to four hits over 62/3 innings and lead Chicago. Addison Russell homered for the second straight game, and Albert Almora and Anthony Rizzo also went deep for Chicago, which hit eight homers in winning the first two games of the series. Arrieta (9-7) walked three in the first two innings, then retired 11 of 12 batters before Caleb Joseph’s a solo home run in the fifth. Arrieta allowed two runs — one earned — with three strikeouts and three walks over 62/3 innings.
