Police say they received inconsistent information about an reported burglary early Friday morning at a Euclid Boulevard home.

Officers arrived just after 1 a.m. at the home, where five people reported being burglarized. A witness told police that unknown suspects had entered through a side door, while claiming to be police with a search warrant.

Police were also told the suspects had duct-taped the arms of one of the teenagers who had been inside the home.

There were two bullet holes in a bedroom window, along with spent shell casings inside the living room and in the breezeway, according to a police report.

Officers said the people at the home didn’t mention shots fired until after police found the bullet holes and shell casings.

The East Side Crime Watch will host its food and clothing giveaway from 10 a.m. to noon today, at 1001 Oak St., on the corner of Fruit Street. Participants are asked to bring bags and identification.

Caught after chase

YOUNGSTOWN

Reports said a woman caught by police about 3:45 p.m. Thursday after taking heroin in a vacant house ran from officers when they were doing a records check on her.

Officers found Danielle Melnek, 29, of South Avenue, hiding behind the curtains in the home in the 400 block of West Chalmers Avenue.

Reports said Melnek admitted to taking heroin in the house. When she retrieved her belongings, reports said police found a needle. Reports said

Melnek asked officers for a break and said she knew she had a warrant. When officers were trying to find out her record, Melnek ran away and was caught after a short chase.

When Melnek was searched, reports said she gave officers a crack pipe she had in her bra that had a dose of crack cocaine inside. She was taken to the Mahoning County jail on charges of breaking and entering, drug abuse and obstruction of justice.
