Monday Night Writers meeting scheduled for July 17

The next meeting of Monday Night Writers will be July 17 from 6-8 p.m. in the Small Meeting Room at the Canfield branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, located at 43 W Main St, Canfield. Area writers, both published and unpublished, are invited to attend. Led by professional writer Nancy Christie, author of “Traveling Left Of Center And Other Stories” and “Rut-Busting Book for Writers (release date: Fall 2017),” the two-hour sessions offer an opportunity for members to get group feedback on ‘works-in-progress.’ For more information, contact Nancy Christie at nancy@nancychristie.com.

Local seniors group to meet on July 17

The Holy Family Seniors Group will meet on July 17 at 11:30 a.m. in Holy Family Parish Hall, located at 2729 Center Road in Poland. Hostesses for this meeting will be Vickie Murphy, Jean Evans, Mary Medovich and Virginia Lyden. A picnic style lunch will be served at noon, followed by Bingo and card games. Learn about applique with the Youngstown Embroiderer’s Guild

Adults and teens, ages 12 and older, can learn about applique from the Youngstown Embroiderer’s Guild at a special program on at 1:30 p.m. on July 19 as part of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County’s Summer Discovery Program. Representatives of the Youngstown Embroiderer’s Guild will conduct the program and provide all supplies. Participants will make a pin cushion. To reserve a spot, call the library at 330-744-8636.

Mercy Health provides health screenings for Hispanic community

Mercy Health – Youngstown’s Hispanic Health program will offer A1C, cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides and blood pressure screenings at various locations in the Valley. Join professional musicians for musical performances at the Poland library on Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. This event will feature “A History of Blues.” This event is for adults.

Bonding with babies and books

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Poland library every Wednesday in August at 10 a.m.

Tales and talk for 2’s and 3’s

Join the Poland library for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader on Aug. 3 at 10:30 a.m.

Read to Roxie

Relax at the Poland library on Aug. 30 at 6 p.m. and read to Roxie, a registered therapy dog with Therapy Dogs International. Each child will be given a 15-minute reading session while spots remain. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Poland library to register. This event is for grades 1-4.

“The Princess and the Pea” performance

Join the Poland library on July 17 at 10 a.m. for a special performance of Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Princess and the Pea,” presented by the Youngstown Playhouse Youth Theatre. This event is for children of all ages.

Test your building and design skills using Dominoes, Q-BA-Mazes, Zoobs and more at the Poland library on July 26 from 10 a.m. until noon. Go to the library to create different structures that can survive challenges. This event is for those in grades K-2.

If you would like to know what an app is or what apps are right for you, learn all about popular apps for smartphones and mobile devices at the Poland library on July 24 at 6 p.m. See a variety of apps that will help you connect to your library, find a good place to eat, keep you entertained in a long grocery line, find a great new recipe or find great music to listen to on your walk. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic

The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at the Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 17. The cost is $110 per golfer. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. The 18 hole four-person scramble will be followed by lunch and a Chinese auction and raffle. Overeaters Anonymous to have local meetings

Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. On Saturdays at 10 a.m., there will be a meeting at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in the Church Hall, Room 2, located at 4453 Warren-Sharon Road in Vienna, Ohio. This location is handicapped accessible. On Sundays at 7 p.m., there will be a meeting at Shenango Presbyterian Church, located at 3144 Wilmington Road (Route 18) in New Castle, Pa. This location is handicapped accessible. On Mondays, a meeting will take place at 1 p.m. at the Girard Multigenerational Center, located at 443 Trumbull Avenue in Girard. This location is handicapped accessible. On Wednesdays, a meeting will take place at 7:30 p.m. at Valley Care - Northside Medical Center in the Medical Education Building, auditorium A, located at 500 Gypsy Lane in Youngstown. GA to meet twice this week

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend. Yoga class

Italian man and woman to be honored at festival, applications accepted

The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest 2017 is seeking nominations from family members or friends regarding their favorite Italian man or Italian woman. The nominees would be considered for the highest honor and if selected would be introduced in person at the festival ceremony on Aug. 4 at 5 p.m. in downtown Youngstown. Applications are available to be retrieved from the festival website at http://www.youngstownitalianfest.org/italian-man-woman-year/ or submit an essay with details regarding your nominee. The following details are recommended: name, birth date and location of birth, spouse’s name, parents names and or grandparents, sisters and brothers names, favorite past times or hobbies, what part of Italy they were from originally and what they have accomplished during the span of their life.
