Youngstown woman faces charges after baby found locked in car as she shopped

BOARDMAN — A Youngstown woman is charged with child endangering after township police found a six-month old baby locked in a parked car at Walmart Tuesday.

Charged is Rasheda Lawrence, 24, of Cambridge Avenue.

According to a police report, police were dispatched to Walmart on Doral Drive at 6:18 p.m. after someone reported seeing an infant left alone in a vehicle.

Police found "no windows open nor [was] the vehicle running," according to the report.

After a towing company opened the vehicle for police, the baby was taken out of the vehicle at 6:36. The child was "sweating and crying," police said, but calmed down once responders gave the baby something to drink.

The child was released to a relative. The mother, Lawrence, was found shopping in the store and arrested without incident.

According to police, surveillance footage shows Lawrence entering the store about 5:45 p.m.

The police report notes that the temperature was 73 degrees at the time.
