Fire damages store in West Farmington

WEST FARMINGTON

The Bontrager Salvage Groceries & Thrift Store, 151 E. College St., was damaged Sunday afternoon by a fire, but many of the West Farmington Village and Farmington Township historical displays kept there were saved, said Farmington Township Fire Chief Jon Bland.

Bland said the fire department was called about 4:20 p.m., and was helped via mutual aid agreements from eight other departments from Trumbull and Geauga counties.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire, which was limited to the attic and roof area of the over 100-year-old building, is under investigation, Bland said.

Canning classes

CANFIELD

Ohio State University Extension Office is having sessions this summer on preserving foods at home. All programs take place from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the extension office, 490 S. Broad St.

On July 26, participants will learn how to can tomatoes and salsa, and on Aug. 16, they will learn how to dehydrate foods. The July class is geared to teach the basics to those who are new to home canning and to provide a refresher to experienced home canners. Participants also will learn how to safely preserve food using a water-bath canner.

Attendees also may have their pressure canners tested for safety and dial-gauge pressure canners tested for accuracy before the programs.

Bridge proposal

KINSMAN

Trumbull County Engineer Randy Smith has proposed a project to replace the bridge on Burnett East Road over Sugar Creek.

The county would replace the 58-foot single-steel beam bridge with a 79-foot single span pre-stressed concrete box beam with composite reinforced concrete deck on reinforced concrete abutments.

The project is scheduled for construction in the spring/summer of 2018. During construction, traffic on Burnett East Road will be detoured for a period not to exceed 90 days to replace the bridge near Kinsman Township Park.

For questions concerning the project, contact Gary W. Shaffer, professional engineer, by Aug. 9 at the Engineer’s Office, 650 N. River Road NW, Warren, or call 330-675-2640.
