Students participated in a different kind of camp this summer at Austintown Intermediate School.
Camp Invention is sponsored by the National Inventors Hall of Fame and is open to students entering first grade through those entering fifth grade. It is a two week program that focuses on different hands-on STEM activities. There are around 40 students who are currently participating in the camp.
The students are separated into two groups, children in first and second grade and the other group is children in third through fifth grade. The activities are created based on the skill set of the children and to help them grow and expand their knowledge in the STEM field.
“It focuses on hands-on STEM skills using innovation and creativity,” said Danielle Chine, District STEM Coach.
Austintown Fitch STEM students volunteered their time to help out with the camp. There were around 10 Fitch students who came everyday to ensure the younger students were learning and getting the help they needed.
During the first week, some of the students participated in Operation Keep Out. In this program they built a toy box using different materials and when the box would open, an alarm would go off. The other group created different items out of duct tape in a program called Duct Tape Billionaire.
Austintown is writing a grant in hopes to continue and expand Camp Invention for next summer. The grant includes being able to allow more children to be involved, free transportation to and from the school and free breakfast and lunch.
