Tom and Katie Shipka celebrate 50th anniversary
YOUNGSTOWN
Tom and Katie Shipka celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary June 17 with a family dinner at Michael Alberini’s restaurant in Boardman. The dinner was hosted by their children, Anne Louise White and Andrew Shipka. In addition to the honorees, those attending included Anne Louise and Richard White, and their son, Brian, and Andrew Shipka and his companion, Jenny Ramirez.
The Shipkas were married at St. Edward Church in Youngstown on June 17, 1967.
They are graduates of Ursuline High School Class of 1961. Mrs. Shipka earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Youngstown State University. She retired from the medical library at Mercy Health in 2012 after 30 years of service. A certified volunteer naturalist and master gardener, Mrs. Shipka volunteers for Mill Creek MetroParks, Austintown Township Park, Ohio State University Extension, and the Mahoning Free Health Clinic.
Her husband earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from John Carroll University and a doctorate in philosophy from Boston College.
Mr. Shipka retired from YSU in 2015 after 46 years as a professor of philosophy and chairman of the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies. He is a member of the Board of Commissioners of Mill Creek MetroParks and is president of his condominium association.
