New president installed

CORTLAND

Cortland dentist Dr. Joseph D. Bedich was installed recently as 2017 president of the Corydon Palmer Dental Society.

A Howland native and a graduate of Miami University, Dr. Bedich earned his DDS degree from the Ohio State University College of Dentistry in 1988. He completed a general-practice residency at Buffalo General Hospital while teaching there and at the State University of New York Buffalo School of Dental Medicine.

He returned to the Warren area in 1992 and now operates The Center For Progressive Dentistry. He is a member of the Cortland Rotary and a lector at Blessed Sacrament Church in Warren. He and his wife, Robin, have two sons, Joseph and Daniel.

Other 2017 officers installed Dr. Daniel DeAngelo, president-elect; Dr. Jeffrey Caldwell, vice-president; Dr. Lori Fitzgerald, secretary, and Dr. Thomas Gabriel, treasurer.

The Corydon Palmer Dental Society is the local component of the Ohio Dental Association and the American Dental Association, and represents member dentists in Trumbull, Mahoning, and Columbiana counties.

Expanded Endoscopy Unit at Salem Regional

Salem Regional Medical Center is opening its newly-expanded Endoscopy Unit on Thursday.

Through the use of specialized equipment, the unit enables physicians to diagnose and treat a variety of stomach, colon and digestive health conditions, and lung diseases.

At 11,600 square feet, SRMC’s new Endoscopy Unit is double the size of its previous space and is located on the hospital’s ground floor, said Dr. Anita Hackstedde, M.D., SRMC president and chief executive officer.

“Our endoscopy procedure volumes have shown a dramatic 31 percent increase over the past seven years, with approximately 3,700 procedures performed in the last fiscal year,” Dr. Hackstedde said.

$20,000 grant received

YOUNGSTOWN

Beatitude House received a $20,000 grant from the Raskob Foundation for Catholic Charities to fund salaries at A House of Blessing Youngstown. The Raskob award is earmarked specifically for case management, child advocacy, site direction, and education coordination.

A House of Blessing Youngstown was the first Beatitude House program to serve homeless women and children in Mahoning County, and the facility has been in operation for more than 25 years. Beatitude House also offers housing, wrap-around services, and educational support in Trumbull and Ashtabula counties. According to the Ohio Poverty Report, the poverty rate has increased in all three of these Ohio counties.

Dr. Lou joins ACH

AKRON

Doctor R. Benjamin Lou, MD, has joined Akron Children’s Hospital as a reconstructive burn surgeon in the Burn Institute and as a member of the hospital’s plastic/reconstructive surgery team.

Along with providing care for children with burn injuries, Dr. Lou has special interests in burn reconstruction and trauma/surgical critical care for adult patients treated in Akron Children’s Paul and Carol David Foundation Burn Institute. The Burn Institute provides specialized inpatient and outpatient care for burn victims of all ages from throughout Northeast Ohio.

As a member of the plastic and reconstructive surgery team, he also will provide reconstructive and aesthetic plastic surgery services to restore function and improve appearance for children affected by birth defects or injuries. Board certified in general surgery and surgical critical care, Dr. Lou and his family reside in Stow.
