About 200 people attended a festive gathering Sunday evening at Poland United Methodist Church on U.S. Route 224 to celebrate the event, which began Sunday. Some facts about the holiday:
This Chinese New Year is the Year of the Rooster and runs until Feb. 15, 2018.
The Chinese zodiac is divided into 12 blocks (or houses) and is similar to the Western zodiac, except that each “house” lasts one year instead of one month.
The Rooster is the 10th animal in the cycle. The other 11 are, in order: the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, dog and pig.
Those born during the Year of the Rooster are generally characterized as honest, flexible, confident, energetic and intelligent.
Famous people born under this sign include singers Beyonce, Eric Clapton and Dolly Parton; tennis players Serena Williams and Roger Federer; and actress Michelle Pfeiffer. Other famous names include Nancy Reagan, Benjamin Franklin and Yoko Ono.
