YSU’s Gorby to speak to Curbstone Coaches

Youngstown State cross country and track coach Brian Gorby will be the guest speaker at Monday’s luncheon meeting of the Curbstone Coaches at The Avion Banquet Center on Western Reserve Road.

The event begins at noon and the public is welcome to attend.

Also, plans are underway for the 50th Curbstone Coaches Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, which is set for May 7 at Mr. Anthony’s in Boardman.

The keynote speaker will be former Oakland Raiders offensive lineman and local business man Ed Muransky.

Lucas wins 400m dash at Penn State event

YSU freshman and Boardman alumnus Brendon Lucas won the 400 meter dash with a time of 48.86 seconds at the Penn State National Invitational that was held Friday and Saturday.

Chad Zallow was just off his fastest time of the season with a time of 7.75 seconds in the finals of 60m hurdles. The lone runner to beat Zallow was Eddie Lovett, the 2011 Pan American Games Junior Champion, of the Virgin Islands and 2016 Olympian, who clocked a 7.66.

Carl Zallow advanced to the finals in the 60m dash with a time of 6.85 seconds but he did not run in the final due to a tightened hamstring.

In the women’s 3,000-meter run, Michelle Klim was sixth with a time of 10:06.66. Brad Jones was fifth in the high jump clearing the bar at 2.07m.

Amber Eles finished third in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.57 seconds as she finished behind Lisa Meneau of Maryland and Quenee Dale from Penn State.

Area flag football teams fall at nationals

Orlando, fla.

All three of the teams from the Youngstown Youth Flag Football Association lose in the opening round of the NFL-sanctioned flag football nationals.

The three teams are coached by former YSU receiver Elliot Giles. The 13-14 girls team finished in fourth place and the 9-10 and 11-12 boys teams each took seventh.

The teams were in Orlando for Pro Bowl-related festivities and will get to visit Disney World.

Arrogate rolls to win in Pegasus World Cup

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla.

Arrogate beat California Chrome again, winning the $12 million Pegasus World Cup on Saturday in his rival’s last race before retirement.

Arrogate went to the front near the head of the stretch, and jockey Mike Smith delivered what became an easy win as California Chrome was eased.

Arrogate has won six straight races, the last three being the Travers, the Breeders’ Cup Classic and now the inaugural running of the world’s richest race.

Senegal and Mane blow it, lose to Cameroon

LIBREVILLE, Gabon

Senegal and Sadio Mane blew it at the African Cup of Nations, with the title favorite’s star player missing the decisive spot kick in a penalty shootout loss to Cameroon in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

Mane saw his penalty, Senegal’s fifth and final, saved by Cameroon goalkeeper Joseph Ondoa. Stunned, Mane turned to face his dejected teammates on the halfway line and muttered something under his breath.

Substitute Vincent Aboubakar then stepped up to blast underdog Cameroon into the last four of the tournament, setting off crazy celebrations from the players. Goalkeeper Ondoa leaped over the advertising boards and sprinted to the Cameroon fans, holding the Cameroon team badge on his shirt and punching his chest. He was pursued by teammates and even coach Hugo Broos, who ran across the field with his arms in the air, jumping in delight.

The game in Franceville finished 0-0 after extra time and Cameroon won 5-4 in the shootout.
