“The Space Between Us” opens Friday

“The Space Between Us” opens Friday in movie theaters nationwide. The plot focuses on the first human born on Mars, who travels to Earth for the first time, experiencing the wonders of the planet through fresh eyes. Here are five facts about the film, from imdb.com:

v Original title: The original name of “The Space Between Us” was “Out of This World.”

v Disruptive: Highland High school in Albuquerque, N.M., was used in some scenes during school hours, which caused a hassle between school administrators and the state film commission.

v Location: Some shooting was done at Spaceport America in New Mexico. At one point, more than 400 crew, actors and extras were at the spaceport during the shoot.

v Late change: With less than a month to go before its debut, STX Entertainment changed the release date from Dec. 16 to Feb. 3. This took the sci-fi drama out of the competitive holiday movie season and into the less crowded mid-winter timetable where it will open against the horror sequel “Rings.”

v Familiar for actor: “The Space Between Us” is the second space-related movie Asa Butterfield has started in, “Ender’s Game” being the first.

“The 23rd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards” (8 p.m., TNT and TBS): Yes, it’s another excuse for movie and TV stars to get all dressed up and wear sparkly things. At least his celebration of top performances should offer some clues as to who might collect Oscars a few weeks from now. Will “La La Land” dance off with lots of trophies? Will “Moonlight” shine extra brightly? Hard to say. What we do know is that Lily Tomlin will be honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Miss Universe Pageant (7 p.m., Fox): Believe it or not, Steve Harvey returns to host tonight’s Miss Universe Pageant from the Philippines. Let’s hope he doesn’t flub it up this time.

“Black Sails” (9 p.m., Starz): You don’t have to talk like a pirate to enjoy the fourth and final season of “Black Sails.” As the saga returns, our buccaneers are at war in the West Indies and the shores of New Providence Island have never been bloodier.
