The mission of AHA is to build healthier lives free of cardiovascular disease and stroke. Feb. 3 is National Wear Red Day when the AHA is asking everyone to Go Red for Women and help raise awareness of women and heart disease. Only 55 percent of women realize heart disease is their number one killer and less than half know what are considered healthy levels for cardiovascular risk factors like blood pressure and cholesterol. Go Red for Women movement works to inform women of the risks so they can take action.

The following acronym explains what it means to Go Red:

Get your numbers: Ask your doctor to check your blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose

Own your lifestyle: Stop smoking, lose weight, be physically active and eat healthy

Raise your voice: Advocate for more women-related research and education

Educate your family: Make healthy food choices, teach the importance of staying active

Donate: Show your support with a donation of time or money

Macy’s, the national sponsor for Go Red for Women, has helped raise more than $60 million since 2004. From Feb. 1 through 6, Macy’s stores, including locations in Youngstown and Niles, will sell red dress pins to support the cause. For every red dress pin purchased, Macy’s will donate $3 to Go Red for Women.
