Ruled competent

YOUNGSTOWN

A woman charged with the December 2013 slaying of an infant was deemed competent to stand trial Friday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court.

The ruling came after Traniqua Floyd, 25, was deemed restored to competency by Heartland Behavioral Center, Massillon, where she was sent for treatment after she was deemed incompetent to stand trial in December 2015.

Floyd is accused of murder in the death of Jamar Jones, 2 months, who died of injuries after being left in a home in the 700 block of Pasadena Avenue on the South Side by his mother Dec. 12, 2013.

Her attorney, Lou DeFabio, asked for another evaluation for his client because he now plans for her to enter a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity. Judge Maureen Sweeney agreed with his request.

Man arraigned on several charges

CORTLAND

Adrian L. Carroll, 55, of Ferndale Avenue Southwest, was arraigned Thursday in Central District Court on several charges associated with the early Thursday robbery of cigarettes and beer from the Murphy’s gas station in Bazetta Township.

A clerk told police a man asked the clerk for cigarettes at 12:11 a.m. and then said, “You know what? This is a robbery.” He didn’t show a gun and grabbed multiple cartons of cigarettes while threatening to kill the clerk.

He ran toward the door, grabbing a 12-pack of beer, police said. It led to a car chase that ended with the car Carroll was driving crashing and the men fleeing. Carroll later returned to the scene and was arrested, police said.

Among Carroll’s charges are felony robbery, failure to comply and drunken driving. His bond was set at $10,000.
