DeVos as angel of reform

Toledo Blade: Betsy DeVos does not know all the answers about education. Fortunately, President Trump’s designee for education secretary doesn’t pretend to.

Nor does she think the federal government ought to decide all the questions.

If Mrs. DeVos can focus on letting students and their parents make choices, she may provide just the shakeup American education needs.

Mrs. DeVos has fought for charters and vouchers. She said she wants to “shift the debate from what the system thinks is best for kids to what moms and dads want, expect, and deserve.”

The words “school choice” are fighting words to teachers unions. But for many parents who want the best for their children, especially for inner-city families trapped in failing schools, choice means opportunity.

As a sincere advocate of more choice, Mrs. DeVos is a change agent feared by the status quo. To parents who want something better for their kids, she represents overdue and meaningful change: She is an angel of reform.
