Shakespeare lecture at KSU campus

WARREN

Peter Byrne, an English professor at Kent State University-Trumbull campus, will give a presentation titled “Shakespeare, Politics and the Revival of Empathy” at 6 p.m. Thursday in the campus theater, 4314 Mahoning Ave. NW.

This is the 10th year that Byrne will write the script for the Shakespeare Theatre Company’s annual “Will on the Hill” benefit in Washington, D.C.

The performance brings together volunteers from the government as well as national media, lobbyists and corporate sponsors, to perform an original play based on Shakespeare and infused with comedic references to contemporary politics. Last year’s performance raised more than $500,000 for schools in that area.

“Writing the play this year, when Washington and the country are going through such divisive – not to say combative – times, has presented me with a serious challenge in writing what’s supposed to be a light comedy about current events,” Byrne said.

The lecture is free to the public, but attendees are encouraged to register for the event at http://tinyurl.com/KSUTFLS.

‘Apocalypse Now’ video game planned

NEW YORK

Francis Ford Coppola wants to make an “Apocalypse Now” video game and he’s hoping fans will help pay for it.

The director has launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise $900,000 for what he says will be an “immersive, psychedelic horror role- playing game” based on his classic 1979 Vietnam War film.

In a message on the crowd-funding site, Coppola said he wanted to experiment with a new platform and bring “Apocalypse Now” to a new generation.
