BPJWL to meet on Feb. 6

The next meeting of the GFWC/Ohio Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League will take place on Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. at Three Sheep Gallery, located at 6010 Market St. in Boardman. Special Valentine cards will be made that evening for one of the BPJW Juniorettes family members. Members are to wear something red in recognition of Women’s Heart month. Preparations for the “Step Back in Time Tea” on March 11 at Poland Presbyterian Church from 1-3 p.m. will be finalized. Members are asked to bring a tea item for a beautiful tea basket that will be given away at a special drawing during the afternoon tea. Hostesses for the month are Linda Crish and Yvonne Ford. The Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League is open to all women older than 18, residing in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties who are interested in friendship, fun and community involvement. Their mission is to provide a creative outlet for women interested in providing community service in areas of arts, conservation, education, home life, international affairs and public affairs. Canfield Lions to host fish fry

The Canfield Lions will host its regular monthly Fish Fry Dinner on Feb. 3 at A La Cart Catering, located at 429 Lisbon St. in Canfield. The cost is $11. Dinner will run from 4:30-7:30 p.m. The main course is haddock, baked or fried, choice of one side: French Fries, Pierogis, macaroni and cheese or Haluski. This includes cole slaw or green beans, roll, drink and dessert. Take out dinners are also available.

Essential oil class to take place in January and February

Naturopathic Doctor Dannielle MacDuff is offering a four-week course on how and when to use essential oils and how to include them in your first aid kit. The course is of particular interest to individuals who prefer holistic health remedies rather than prescription medication. This course takes place at ETI Technical College, located at 2076 Youngstown-Warren Road in Niles, on Jan. 19 and 26, and Feb. 2 and 9. Classes begin at 7 p.m. and last until 8:30 p.m. The entire course costs a $65 donation to the Phoenix House Building Fund and includes all costs and materials associated with the class. Cardinal Mooney open house

On Jan. 29 between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., Cardinal Mooney High School, located at 2545 Erie St. in Youngstown, will host an open house. Attendants will be treated to student guided tours, meet and greets with faculty, information sessions about curriculum, scheduling and financial assistance, on-site applications for admission and entering for a chance to win tuition discounts.

Newcomers meetings for January and February

Newcomers of Mahoning Valley Book Club will be meeting on Feb. 9 and will be discussing a book by David Baldacci, “The Camel Club.” The Movie Group saw La La Land in January and is looking forward to seeing another good movie on Feb. 15. Needlework will resume meeting in February on the 7th and a restaurant and date will be chosen for Roundtowners, also in February. The birthday luncheon will be announced at the luncheon in January. The luncheon in February will be on the 22nd at 11:30 a.m. at the Poland library. Lunch will be catered by Kravitz. Attorney and former judge Shirley Christian will be speaking. PLYMC offers online learning service

The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County (PLYMC) is offering a free service which connects library cardholders to the popular learning platform, Lynda.com. Library customers can get to the free Lynda.com offerings by using the PLYMC portal through a link on the LibraryVisit.org website. Look on the horizontal menu under “LEARN” for the link. Library customers can learn anytime, day or night. Lynda.com is available online 24/7. The learning resource offers more than 3,000 courses and 150,000 video tutorials taught by experts. Some available areas include 3-D, animation, audio, business, design, home computing, photography, video, the web, technical skills, business techniques, creative skills and more. Lynda.com is a paid service which is being provided free of charge to PLYMC cardholders through the library’s website: LibraryVisit.org. Ohio residents who don’t have a card will find it easy to sign up. With a digital card, online offerings such as Lynda.com can be used without worry about fines or fees. ABWA meeting to be Feb. 14

The Mill Creek Chapter of American Business Women’s Association will host its Feb. 14 meeting at A La Cart in Canfield. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. and costs $18. The menu consists of city chicken and lemon chicken, red skin potatoes, California blend vegetables, tossed salad, cole slaw, Jello, rolls and beverages and dessert. The guest speaker for the evening will be owner of Mr. Darby’s, Bob Neapolitano. The new store is on Market Street, next to Antones. A short meeting will follow. The public is invited. APA shoe drive taking place

In the spirit of the holidays, Austintown Podiatry Associates recently announced its annual shoe drive. They are accepting new and gently used shoes at all three offices. The shoes will then be delivered to those who are less fortunate. Shoes can be dropped off at any of the three locations during business hours. The Austintown office is located at 1300 S Canfield-Niles Road in Austintown, the Warren location is 3802 Elm Road N.E. in Warren and the Boardman location is 7010 South Ave., Suite 3.

Bonding with babies and books and signs, oh my!

Come to the Canfield library on Feb. 23 at 10 a.m. and learn how to use American Sign Language (ASL) with your child through rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize. Learn easy corresponding signs to learn and share with your little ones.

BPJWL hosts event

The Ohio GFWC Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League is having a Wine and Beer Taste on Jan. 29 at The Magic Tree Pub and Eatery from 2–5 p.m., which will benefit local charities. Tickets are $20 per person. There will be a 50/50 raffle, food for purchase and more. Tickets are available from league members. Playtime at your library

You’ll read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for Kindergarten at the Canfield library on Feb. 10 at 10 a.m. Activities will vary at each program. This event is for ages 2-6. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Moana’s island getaway

It may be cold and blustery outside, but inside Canfield library they’re celebrating the tropics with Moana. Join the library for activities, crafts, music and an ocean of fun on Feb. 11 at 11 a.m. A treat will be provided. All ages are welcomed.

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Canfield library on Feb. 2, 9 and 16 at 10 a.m.

Join the Canfield library every Tuesday in February at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.

Join the Canfield library on Feb. 14 at 11:30 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes and finger plays, and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Family story time

Bring the whole family to the Canfield library on Feb. 21 at 6 p.m. for stories, games, crafts and fun for all ages.

Gotta move story time

This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join the Canfield library every Wednesday in February at 10 and 11:30 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.

Lego my library

Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Canfield library on Feb. 4 at 2:30 p.m. and Feb. 15 at 6 p.m. Legos will be provided. This event is for children ages 6 and up.

Mini Monet

Draw to paint a very wet fish. Children will work independently to trace a pattern, then color their picture with washable markers and use water to paint at the Canfield library on Feb. 25 at 10 a.m.. Registration required. The event has a maximum of 10 students. This is for children ages 6-8.

Tales to tails

Sign up to read aloud to a registered therapy dog at the Canfield library on Feb. 1 at 6 p.m. Readers of all levels and abilities are welcome. Helps develop reading skills, promotes confidence and encourages a love of reading. Each session is 15 minutes. Bring a book of your choice. This event is for children grades K and up. Dogs are provided by K9’s for Compassion, a community partner of Pet Partners. Sign up is required. Call 330-744-8636 to register.

Take a guess

Guess the number of items in the jar at the Canfield library during library hours in February. Closest guess wins a small prize. This event is for the family.

STEAM Saturday-Volcanoes

Learn about volcanoes at the Canfield library on Feb. 18 at 11 a.m. They’ll make one of their own and explain the science behind the eruption. This event is for children in grades 4-6.

Teen Advisory Board

Join the Teen Advisory Board. Help plan and support teen activities at the library. Meet new people and have fun at the Canfield library on Feb. 14 at 3 p.m. Snacks will be provided. This event is for teens in grades 7-12.

Teen powered art-bot

Combine drawing and engineering into an art drawing machine using an electric toothbrush and a pool noodle at the Canfield library on Feb. 7 at 3 p.m. Snacks will be served.

Open mic night / poetry slam

If you’re a poet and you know it...Do you have a poem or short story that you would like to share? Come to the Canfield library on Feb. 16 at 6:30 p.m. for open mic night. They will serve tea between performances. This event is for teens and adults.

Valentine’s Day by candlelight

This is a monthly book club to discuss titles chosen “off the shelves” of the Canfield library’s Book Club room. January will feature “The Goldfinch” by Donna Tartt. Join the fun on Jan. 31 at 6:30 p.m.

Do you have coupons you don’t need or need coupons you don’t have? Drop in during library hours at the Canfield library to stretch your shopping dollars by swapping coupons. This event is for adults.

Overeaters Anonymous to have local meetings

Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. On Saturdays at 10 a.m., there will be a meeting at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in the Church Hall, Room 2, located at 4453 Warren-Sharon Road in Vienna, Ohio. This location is handicapped accessible. On Sundays at 7 p.m., there will be a meeting at Shenango Presbyterian Church, located at 3144 Wilmington Road (Route 18) in New Castle, Pa. This location is handicapped accessible. On Mondays, a meeting will take place at 1 p.m. at the Girard Multigenerational Center, located at 443 Trumbull Avenue in Girard. This location is handicapped accessible. GA to meet twice this week

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend. Chair yoga

Chair yoga is sponsored by the Friends of PLYMC. Pay as you attend at $10 per class. You should dress comfortably. Class will meet the first Friday of every month at the Canfield library at 10 a.m. This class is for adults.

America’s Schoolmaster exhibit

The Early Days of William Holmes McGuffey will be on display in the Melnick Museum at Fellows Riverside Gardens from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Learn more about the early days of McGuffey and his boyhood homestead, located in Coitsville and now known as the McGuffey Wildlife Preserve. The exhibit will be open though January 2017.
