Keck wins state award for arts

COLUMBUS

Youngstown-area resident Becky Keck, executive director of SMARTS, has won the Governor’s Award for the Arts in Ohio for arts education.

SMARTS — or Students Motivated by the Arts — is a community-based art school that seeks to inspire students in all areas of life by teaching the discipline and focus that creating art requires.

It was started 20 years ago at Youngstown State University. When the school cut the program several years ago, Keck kept it alive and successfully transitioned it to an independent program that reopened in 2014. SMARTS is in the process of moving into the Ohio One building in downtown Youngstown.

SMARTS offers classes during and after school for students from pre-kindergarten to 12th grade in visual arts, music, dance, theater and creative writing.

Keck is one of nine winners of the Governor’s Award announced this week. All winners will be honored on May 17 in Columbus.
