Helping those in need

YOUNGSTOWN

According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, nearly 3.5 million Americans never leave their homes, limiting access to fresh food, health care and socialization.

In order to eliminate the barrier of transportation in the communities it serves, Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley donated a passenger van to the Catholic Charities Regional Agency to help provide transportation to those in need.

The van will be used primarily in Catholic Charities’ homeless assistance and outreach program to transport clients to essential services and assist in moving into stable housing in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties, said Crystal Jones, executive director of grants and contracts for Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley.

Salem Regional honored

SALEM

Salem Regional Medical Center has received the 2017 Innovation & Excellence Award for “Community Hospital of the Year” from Corporate LiveWire, an online news resource for the global business and corporate communities. SRMC earned the honor for its advanced technology and innovation as a leader in the health care industry.

The Innovation & Excellence Awards are an internationally recognized program that recognizes companies, organizations and individuals who are standard-bearers of excellence in their respective fields.

Salem Regional has recently launched a number of innovative programs and facility renovations to enhance patient care; and on Feb. 2, the hospital will open its newly expanded Endoscopy Unit to meet the region’s high demand for more convenient access to advanced diagnostics and outpatient care, said Dr. Anita Hackstedde, M.D., SRMC president and chief executive officer.

YWCA to assist homeless

YOUNGSTOWN

The YWCA of Youngstown, in partnership with the Mahoning County Mental Health and Recovery Board, received $26,650 from the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services that will enable the YWCA to assist homeless people with mental illness and addictions to maintain housing through its transitional housing and case-management services program.

More than 64 percent of the individuals in the transitional housing program have mental health and/or addiction backgrounds. The transitional housing program is designed to meet the needs of low- or no-income homeless women, 18 and older, with or without children. It provides communal- and apartment-style housing with supportive services.

The award is a match to the Ohio Development Services Agency’s $106,600, two-year grant for supportive housing awarded to YWCA.
