Solensky is back with Phantoms

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown Phantoms have acquired Samuel Solensky from the Johnstown Tomahawks of the North American Hockey League (NAHL).

Solensky played with the Phantoms during September training camp and the United States Hockey League (USHL) Fall Classic in Pittsburgh.

“Solensky really stood out and competed hard at our camp in September, and he had a very good showing with us against the USA NTDP U18 team at USHL Fall Classic,” general manager Jason Koehler said. “At that time we did not have another spot available for an import player, so Solensky elected to play in Johnstown due to the proximity to Youngstown and the potential of returning to our team.”

Solensky is a 1998 born left-shot forward from Michalovce, Slovakia. He played in 31 games for the Tomahawks this season scoring eight goals and tallying 15 assists.

Friday, the Phantoms lost 2-1 in overtime to the Dubuque Fighting Saints. Alec Mahalak scored the Phantoms goal. They’ll play again tonight in Dubuque, Iowa.

Phantoms forward Garrett Hall was claimed on a waiver trade by the USHL Tri-City Storm.

Due to an off-season injury and recent surgery, Hall has not played this season.

“It’s a great opportunity for Garrett to go to another USHL club that’s interested him and his ability in the future,” Koehler said.

Las Vegas teen charged in slaying

LAS VEGAS

A fight over name-calling between girlfriends promoted a fight that resulted in the death of a Missouri State University football player outside his Las Vegas home, according to a police report about the arrest of a teenager charged Friday as an adult with murder.

Richard Allan Newsome Jr., 17, stood in shackles and wasn’t asked during a brief initial court hearing to enter a plea in the killing last weekend of Richard J. Nelson.

A judge scheduled a Feb. 6 preliminary hearing of evidence in the case. Prosecutors might also take the case to a grand jury.

Defense attorney John Momot said outside court that Newsome plans to plead not guilty. He called the shooting “an unfortunate incident.”

A group of Newsome’s friends and relatives who attended the hearing declined in a hallway to comment. Newsome remains jailed without bail.

The slaying has drawn intense interest in Las Vegas, where family members said Nelson died trying to protect his older sister, and in the Missouri State college community, where a campus memorial service is scheduled Jan. 29.
